HMSN-CMT reflexes

Hi! I'm from Manchester in the North West of England. I posted

my introduction on 8th June 2006, but at the time I wasn't sure whether

I had CMT or not and was waiting to see a neurologist. I went to see

him yesterday and he thinks I have " some form of HMSN " - he did not

seem to have heard of CMT, although he seemed to know his stuff and

gave me a thorough examination. He now wants me to have electrical

nerve stimulation tests (I presume these will be an NCV and EMG), so I

am waiting for appointment to have these done, although he did say

there was a long waiting list.

I just have a couple of questions which I hope someone can answer. He

said that the reflexes in my knees were normal which is unusual for

someone who has HMSN. Does anyone else with CMT have normal reflexes?

Also, I have read in various posts that muscle cramps are a common

feature of CMT, but I don't seem to get these. I get the crawling

feeling in my legs at night when I finally sit down and my legs below

the knee ache and feel like they are waking up after going to sleep, as

though the circulation isn't quite there. Anyone else experience this?

If anyone can give me any information regarding this, I'd be very

grateful.

Hi ,

CMT is the same thing as HSMN. CMT stands for the name (Charcot-Marie-Tooth) of

the people who founded it. HSMN is Hereditary Sensor Motor Neuropathy which

explains the neuropathy problem we have. I'm

sure Gretchen can explain this in better terms.

I have normal reflexes which puzzle doctors. I'm sure the tingling your getting

below the knees at night, is called Restless Leg Syndrome.

I get muscle cramps and various posts from here mentioned it. My theory the

cramps are from CMT, because the muscles aren't doing

what they're suppose to. Anyway, good luck with your doctors tests.

Debbie
