Guest guest
Hi - what you would need to do if you don't have a social worker is phone the duty social worker, the phone number will be on the local authorities web pages. They have a duty of care. The next thing I would do is look at the criteria for support. Many LA now are only offering support to families with "critical or substantial" needs. Ask for an assessment as you have a child with a disability and are struggling to cope. They should send a social worker out to do an initial assessment or they may ever to it over the phone. The key here is the criteria for support.... and I suggest you keep that in mind. What I have found in the past is to tell them what you are coping with on a really bad day. Just ask what support they could offer you owing to your Childs needs... it is a needs assessment but often they become a resource assessment, and all that means is if they have a service they can slot your child in, they may offer you a place.... but the key will be to get the assessment saying exactly what your needs are and your Childs. Good luck. SOCIAL SERVICES Re: help from socail services -SORRY FOR POSTING THIS AGAIN FOLKES BUT NO ONE ANSWERED SO I THOUGHTID TRY ANGAIN. ANY COMMENTS GOOD OR BAD WELCOME! Guest guest
Hi I don't where you live but you should be able to contact your local Children with Disabilities Team/Social Workers names seem to change all the time. You can self refer or ask your GP or your child's Paediatritian for a referral. Usually they start off doing a Carers Assessment for you to see if you qualify for Carers Allowance and if you are in need of respite. Nowadays this is usually offered in the form of Direct Payments ie they give you money to employ someone to care for the child to give you some respite or holiday clubs. You can also apply for Disability Living Allowance for the child (check out NAS or AFASIC websites for advice on filling in form to get the best results). A lot depends on the perceived level of disability and I don't know your circumstances so can't comment further really. Guest guest
Lindsey, do you feel able to tell us more about your son behaviours and also how he is health-wise, we may be able to help with this if given more details, i am particularly interested in bowels, etc, but there are also some behaviour experts on this list i think. Guest guest
I read recently that 70% of social services depts. now only provide any services to families who are in the highest (ie most severe) group according to their eligibility criteria. I suggest you get hiold of your LA's set of criteria - they should supply them on request - and ask them which of the four groups get respite etc in your LA area before you start. Also, if you can. Get help from a local disability rights organisation if you can. I recommend the book Disabled Children and the Law by Luke Clements et al. - it's written for families to use. Margaret (whose LA has unlawfully, I think, taken away respite from us and who may be starting Court action over it this week....) Guest guest
-hi nikki thanks for asking. lewis is 5 1/2. he is very bright and at mainstream school with 10hr support mostly for settling in in the mornings which is finds hard. the main problems are with defience and answering back, slamming doors and going to throw things if he cant do what he likes doing and we want or need him to do something else. he takes hours to eat his dinner and this tends to turn into a battle field. He refuses to eat/ swallow and will often store food in his mouth. he os over emaotionall and tends to over react. he tells me he hates me frequently! his bowel movents are a problem but he now takes 1 movical, 1 senna cap and 1 oxypowder per day and will now open his bowels once per day. before this he would go 4 to 5 days without going. Is this the sort of info you meant? thanks for any help kind regards lindsey -- In Autism-Biomedical-Europe , " Nikki " <nikki- mills@...> wrote: > > > > > Lindsey, > > do you feel able to tell us more about your son behaviours and also > how he is health-wise, we may be able to help with this if given more > details, i am particularly interested in bowels, etc, but there are > also some behaviour experts on this list i think. > > Nikki > > > > > > > > > > > > ID TRY ANGAIN. Margret how do you take action against Social Services. We are in a sticky situation. My son gets higher DLA and Mobility but still no respite. We had the head of scoial services and children round to our house to access the situation. She said we desperatly needed respite but they didnot have the money til October. I'm really getting annoyed waiting. Would welcome any advice on this topic. I have also contacted my local councillor. Many thanks Sara >
Guest guest
You have to get a completed assessment and for a Care Plan to be drawn up. The book I recommended will help you. but you also need advice from a disability rights organisation/law centre/CAB/solicitor.If provision is in the care Plan they HAVE to provide what's there. However, they will obviously delay issuing one or put nothing in it, which is why you need advice. Margaret
Guest guest
HI LINDSEY, MY THOUGHTS BELOW: > lewis is 5 1/2. he is very bright and at mainstream school with 10hr > support mostly for settling in in the mornings which is finds hard. > the main problems are with defience and answering back, slamming > doors and going to throw things if he cant do what he likes doing and > we want or need him to do something else. IS THIS BEHAVIOUR JUST AT HOME OR AT SCHOOL AS WELL? IS HE FINDING SCHOOL VERY STRESSFUL, SO MUCH SO THAT WHEN HE COMES HOME HE TAKES IT OUT ON YOU??? he takes hours to eat his > dinner and this tends to turn into a battle field. He refuses to > eat/ swallow and will often store food in his mouth. he os over > emaotionall and tends to over react. he tells me he hates me > frequently! IS HE A FUSSY EATER??? DOES HE HAVE STRANGE LIKES/DISLIKES FOODWISE? DO DIFFERENT TEXTURED FOODS BOTHER HIM? MY SON DOES THE KEEPING THE FOOD IN THE MOUTH TRICK SOMETIMES, I'VE NEVER BEEN SURE WHY, MAYBE IN OUR CASE BECAUSE HE LIKES THE TASTE? I JUST IGNORE IT! MAYBE JUST LET HIM EAT WHEN HE IS HUNGRY AND THE AMOUNT HE WANTS AND STOP MEAL TIMES BECOMING A BATTLE GROUND, JUST CUT ALL THE FUSS SHORT AND LET HIM GET DOWN, INGNORING THE BEAHVIOURS. JUST A SUGGESTION, I'M NOT AN EXPERT HERE, BUT SOMEHOW YOU NEED TO MAKE LIFE MORE BEARABLE!!! > his bowel movents are a problem but he now takes 1 movical, 1 senna > cap and 1 oxypowder per day and will now open his bowels once per > day. before this he would go 4 to 5 days without going. > Is this the sort of info you meant? > thanks for any help OK, SORRY MORE QUESTIONS, ALTHOUGH HE IS GOING REGULARLY NOW IT WOULD BE USEFUL TO KNOW WHAT HIS STOOLS ARE LIKE, IN ALL THE GORY DETAIL!!! ALSO DOES HE HAVE A FLAT TUMMY OR IS HIS ABDOMEN BLOATED? DO YOU THINK HE IS NO LONGER CONSTIPATED? I SUSPECT THERE MAY BE THINGS GOING ON IN HIS GUT THAT NEED TREATING AND IF YOU ARE ABLE TO DO THIS SUCCESSFULLY THE BEHAVIOUR PROBLEMS ABOVE WILL IMPROVE IMO. ITS JUST WORKING OUT WHATS GOING ON IS THE TRICKY THING!!!
