Guest guest
Thank you so much for posting this Tom. Appa was indeed a jewel she was my radiology professor my junior and senior years at WSCC 1978 & 1979 and that of my father and uncle Marlo Saboe 1953 & 1954. She loved to help us young wannabe docs always coming up behind us at the view boxes quizzing, instructing always in an upbeat manner never in a condescending manner though we knew nothing…she love every minute of it and everyone knew it….I loved that woman….now she gets to graduate and I look very much forward to seeing her again…as there isn’t any question where that wonderful lady is headed…. ----- Vern Saboe, Jr, DC., DACAN., FICC., DABFP., FACO. 915 19th Ave SE Albany, OR 97322 phone: e-mail: vern@... website: www.drvernsaboe.com From: oregondcs [mailto:oregondcs ] On Behalf Of TFreedland@... Dr. Lee McCaffrey (University of Western States) has confirmed the information. Dr. was a valuable asset to chiropractic in the Pacific Northwest, if not to the profession as a whole. She will be missed. A service is schedule for Saturday, August. 4, 2012, at 2 p.m. at Holgate Baptist Church in Portland. However, Dr. McCaffrey said that a memorial service for the profession was planned for some time this fall. There is a guest book within the obituary which can be reached through the link to the Oregonian. I am sure all of your comments will be appreciated. Guest guest
Dr. Appa was one of the first docs to respond to volunteering when the Outside-In chiropractic program was started. Guest guest
I believe my class (grad 1994) may have been one of the last to receive the gilft of Appa's incredible intellect, kindness and patience. It was she who moved my 'tassel' at graduation. I have met and had the honor of being mentored by many wonderful women (and men, of course), but she was a step above. God speed, Dr. Appa. Guest guest
Wow, Tom, thanks for posting this. I hadn't seen it. She was a great DC. I had her as an instructor, worked with her on the WSCC alumni association on various projects. She was always so supportive of graduates, a great sounding board for helping the profession. Guest guest
I graduated in Dec 1995. At that time, Appa was a wondering sage of the WSCC campus. Not officially teaching any classes but she would pop in and dispense wisdom.I'd like to share my favorite Appa moment:When I was in the senior clinic, Dr. Yocum came for a visit. One day, while he was torturing the radiology residents, I was hiding in the back of the viewbox room watching them squirm. Dr. Yocum put up a film and I had no idea where the lesion was let alone the Dx, none of the residence knew the Dx either. But from just behind me I heard, "Where did you get a film of 'blank blank' disease?" (I had never heard of the condition and unfortunately I can't remember the name.)Dr. Yocum squinting in the dark said, "that must be Appa?! That is impressive you know this disease there are only 14 cases in the literature." Appa nonchalantly replied, "I've seen one before." I was awe struck. 80+ years old, from across a room, with no history, she nailed an obscure Dx with only a quick glance.May she rest in peace.Glenn Sykes, DCPortland, OregonTo: Vern@...CC: TFreedland@...; oregondcs From: bluepearl2001@...Date: Sat, 28 Jul 2012 01:19:13 +0000Subject: Re: A Loss to the Profession I believe my class (grad 1994) may have been one of the last to receive the gilft of Appa's incredible intellect, kindness and patience. Guest guest
A couple of Appa stories. I believe that Appa gave birth to her kids attended by residents of WSCC. Dick Stober the famous nasal specific guy was her brother. I was showing her a film to have her review and I was battling a cold and coughing preparing to go lay down in a ditch and expire. She stood up and grabbed me by the back of the neck and made a tiny fist with her other hand. She vigorously rubbed my sternum which hurt like anything. She said that she was stimulating neurolymphatic points. I recovered immediately and went on to be a successful chiropractor (or so the story goes). She was a wonderful person and brilliant to boot. -- E. Abrahamson, D.C.
