I normally don't have more then one every couple of weeks, so after the first one, I took a breathing treatment and thought I was good to go. Then I got on my Bosu for my workout. I did squats on the Bosu (3 sets of 10 reps with 30 pounds) and started to cough a little. So I decided to take longer rest breaks between sets to catch my breath. I then did Bosu clock lunges (2 sets of 14 reps because of doing 6 and 12 twice also with 30 pounds) doing one set in each direction. I thought I was going to die. I took my inhaler and felt better, so back into the gym I went. I did Bosu Plie Squats (2 sets, 10 reps, 30 pounds) then Bosu Deadlifts (2 sets, 10 reps, 30 pounds) and felt my chest getting tight again, but not a full blown attack. I decided that I didn't want to have another attack so I'd take my intensity down and do something else. Those 4 exercises took 30 minutes because of the asthma breaks and was only in my zone for 11 minutes. (Avg. HR 112, 95 calories, 50% fat) So then I put in Winsor Pilates Bun & Thigh Sculpting. I've had this since I ordered the set from an infomercial in 2002, but hadn't done it before. I guess I had just stuck with the Basics then moved on to the 20 minute and then the Accelerated and never did the Abs or this one. Anyway, it was a good butt workout. You spend 10 minutes on one side and then flip over and do 10 minutes on the other side. I think I would have preferred to mix it up a little more, but maybe not doing it the way I would have taught it was good for me because I'm feeling my butt cheeks right now in a way I normally don't feel them after my workouts. For this one, I was only in my zone 3 1/2 minutes of the 20 minute workout, but that is good because that meant no asthma. (Avg. HR 102, 50 calories, 56% fat) I felt so much better after this one that I decided to do a little more, so I stuck in 10 Minute Solutions Pilates and did the Pilates for Buns and Thighs on it too. Much easier then the Winsor, but still a good finisher for me. I was never in my target heart rate range, but it helped to slowly bring my HR down so that is good. (Avg. HR 97, 16 calories, 56% fat) I felt fine afterwards, but then I was just sitting here and had another asthma attack. I bet I'm coming down with the bug my DD has that has caused her to have strep and tonsilitis. I can't think of anything else that would cause me to have this much of a problem with my asthma today. Time to get the vitamins out and double dose to make sure I don't get sick.Tonya L. -www.smellabella.comwww.trainingwithtonya.com

Guest guest
LOL! Yeah, I know. I realized when I went to do my totals on my food journal last night that I had only had one yesterday so I went to bed with one. Not even any tightness in my chest since. I told my husband that if I ever decide to give it up completely, I'll be stuck on caffeine pills because caffeine works so much better for my asthma then the other meds they have me on. I may have to go get some Vivrin and see if it works so I can see if it would ever be possible to cut those excess calories. Guest guest
, I've dealt with asthma for so many years now, that it really takes a bad attack to get me to slow down. I have all the meds including a nebulizer for the breathing treatments like you get in the hospitla and take them regularly, so I shouldn't have a bad attack. The doctors at one point classified mine as exercise induced asthma but have since changed it to allergy induced. Because I'm allergic to basically all evergreen trees, this is the worst time of the year for my allergies. So between it being cold here (whick is also a trigger), the allergies, and possibly having a bit of Koti's bug, plus exercising on top of it, I pretty much set myself up for it. But I've also been doing it for so long that I know what I can and can't do when it is acting up. Hence the change from a cardio/weights workout to a pilates workout, so I didn't overwork my lungs but could still do something. Don't worry, I won't risk anything. I just have to keep it light and low on cardio until I feel better. Guest guest
I hope you feel better fast Tonya so you don't have to deal with it so much! The caffeine/asthma connection is really interesting too. I'd never heard that one before. Not that I know much about asthma, my son has it but very mild and only seasonal. He just needs to take some meds in the fall and winter and that's it (double the flovent when he's got a cold). I thought about giving him caffeine because he has a cold now but I don't want to introduce him to caffeine... he's energetic enough!! Hopefully the flovent (and albuterol as needed and singulair daily) will continue to be enough!! :-) My Christmas Workout Today I wanted to do a nice long tough workout because of not having to be anywhere but at home. Guest guest
Well, I went to the doctor today and it is strep throat. I'm on antibiotics now (and yogurt to counteract some of it) and should be good to go in a few days. In the meantime, I feel like crap and my throat hurts. I'm eating pie because the chocolate pudding is the only thing I can stand to swallow. At least I make it with fat free cool whip and skim milk....LOL Tonya L. -www.smellabella.comwww.trainingwithtonya.com Re: My Christmas Workout I hope you are wrong and don't get sick Tonya!! Guest guest
Thanks! Actually, the caffeine thing is something I learned when I was getting a certification as a first responder when I lived in Arkansas. Basically, it was something we were told we could do as an emergency treatment for someone having an asthma attack or anaphalaxis (I know I can't spell) from an allergic reaction if we didn't have an epi-pen available. Another one is to use childrens benedryl and have them swish it under their tongue so that it is absorbed faster. My kids are teenagers and to this day I still carry childrens benedryl in my first aid kit in my car just in case. Tonya L. -www.smellabella.comwww.trainingwithtonya.com My Christmas Workout Today I wanted to do a nice long tough workout because of not having to be anywhere but at home. But instead I only got an hour in, but I suppose that is better then nothing, right. I've been having bad asthma attacks today for some reason. I've had like 3 of them. Guest guest
Jen, No, while I can't talk, I can still use my fingers. My DH made a comment on how quiet it was around the house with DD and I both having sore throats, so I started emailing and im'ing him. LOL I'm thinking Monday night is going to be a big celebration for me. DH will be at work so the kids and I are partying together here at home, but it will be the happiest I've ever been to see a new year! Guest guest
Jen, Well, the caffeine won't help a rash type allergic reaction, but some people have anaphalaxis from a bad allergic reaction which is basically a closing off of the airways and throat. For those reactions, caffeine will help until you can get the real medicine needed so they can still breathe. Guest guest
Tonya, you are awesome! Thank you for explaining this so well. They don't use mouthwash, but they do know how to swish water in their mouths so this is good. (trying to get my own panic reaction down just thinking about something like this happening!) I think I would have preferred to mix it up a little more, but maybe not doing it the way I would have taught it was good for me because I'm feeling my butt cheeks right now in a way I normally don't feel them after my workouts.
Guest guest
No, not awesome, just experienced. That boy has had me in the emergency room so many times that I don't get stressed about it anymore. The first time he had breathing problems he was 5 months old. He saw a pediatric cardiologist before he was a year old for a heart murmur. He had tubes in his ears at 4. I can't count the number of times his asthma was bad enough that we had to go to the ER. Bad enough that I have a home nebulizer and get Albuterol vials 100 at a time. He once decided to play plastic man and try to reach for the remote to the tv from the top of the bunk bed and fell and broke his arm so bad that my DH got sick looking at it. I got to hold him still while the doctor set that bone. Then, of course, we can't forget him getting hit by a truck while chasing his dog. (I did freak out a little on that one.) DH thought he was dead in the middle of the road when we got to the accident scene, but I could hear him from a block away talking to the paramedics. That was God keeping me calm because I'm deaf in one ear and can't hear the tv from across the room. I know God has special plans for him, because he's survived things that he shouldn't have over the years. He's definitely helped me learn to be calm in a crisis. And on top of Bobby's antics, I was certified as a first responder 12 years ago and have stopped at several car accidents to help out over the years and even did cpr on a boss once to bring him back from a heart attack. Whats funny is that if I cut myself or get a shot, I pass out. I have the weakest stomach on the planet, but when a crisis happens, its amazing the way the body responds. Don't worry about panicing if something were to happen, because I know from experience that you'll do what needs to be done and get things taken care of and then after it is all over and everyone is fine, you'll lose it. My DH has actually learned that when I get home from the hospital with one of the kids and they are settled it bed, it is time for me to go get in the shower and have a good cry. He's gotten to where he gets in with me and just holds me while I cry for a good 5-10 minutes and get the panic out of my system. During the crisis, though, I'm as cool as a cucumber. You might go take a first aid class so you know what to do in some of the strange situations kids can get into, but as long as you know what to do, your body will take over and get you through it without the panic. Guest guest
Wow, Tonya. That is a lot of injuries!!! I have only had to deal with one emergency trip. That was when my son (1 at the time) fell, with a flute in his mouth and put a big hole in the back of it..ugh..Anyway, you're amazing - I have a weak stomache too, but if you're forced to deal with it, you seem to learn how to adapt! Guest guest
Bobby is 15...will be 16 in August. So yeah, now I'm also dealing with teaching him to drive.
