Uricol Pads - Gel based pads for urinary collection in diapers

The Newcastle Sterile Urine Collection Pads have been

sold to a new company. They are now called Uricol pads. They are gel-based pads

that have been tested for use with a number of urinary metabolic tests and are

thus great for collecting urine for UAAs and MAPs, for example. They have not

been tested for use in testing for toxic metals or essential elements, so I

don’t yet recommend that you use them for UTMs or UTMEEs.

I have used them for first morning void and random

collection, and have put them in her diaper when she went down for her nap. You

put the pad into an inside-out diaper so that the diaper doesn’t suck the

urine out of the pad. You don’t want the pad to sit for a long period of

time, however, so you need to check it regularly - they are designed to be used

while awake and you check every ten minutes to see if they are full. We just

wanted to see what would happen if we tried to get it while she was sleeping,

and it worked. Best however, to put a pad on the mattress as some did leak out.

The kit comes with two pads, a little syringe and a 25 ml

test tube. You lay the pad out on a flat surface, and use the syringe at a 45

degree angel to take up the urine. I opened the pad with tweezers so as not to

touch it, separated it into 3 parts, and used a huge syringe to squeeze it out.

I got a complete 25 ml out of it. I have gotten as much as 40 ml out of one.

The cost from Redland Healthcare in the UK is £39.99

for a box of 40 packages (= 80 pads), plus shipping. So minus the shipping,

that is around $80.00, or $1 per pad at current rates. I’m not sure about

other distributors prices.

There are a number of people in the US who order

from Redland Healthcare, so I think this is a possibility for all.

As always, it is best to get a clean catch if you can.

Many of us can’t so this is a possible alternative.
