Great workout .

I think you will like Joy Of Yoga. Its a favorite of many people. I personally love doing it when I want more of a relaxing stretchy type workout without all the sun salutations.

Great job with TJ, ! Your description was very good, too. I

totally agree about having trouble keeping with the longer combos and

with the speed. And what you said about new moves being added. A

few times I remember thinking " when did I learn THAT move? " . lol

And I think the music is great, too. I haven't made any decisions

about it either, and will try it again in the future. :)

She starts doing the kicks and then slows down to show them then

speeds up again. She queues very well, which is a big help, but I

felt like I couldn't keep up with the moves a lot of the time because

I hadn't mastered the basics and then to throw in punch and kick

combinations too made it more difficult. I've decided I can do the

tuck but I have a hard time keeping tucked throughout the workout

though I tried. I also still do not get, at all, the pulsing tuck

(can't remember what it is called). I don't think I care if I get it

or not either. So... I'm back to needing to work with this more to

see if want to keep it or not. I'm going to keep working with it

because when I was getting the hang of things (and sometimes I did) I

liked it, plus too few of my workouts seem to have really good music

with them and Chalene really seems fun. I burned 137 calories doing

it which isn't bad either. I think I prefer athletic, kickboxing

drill type workouts better though.

Thanks Sara! Sometimes I think we're exercisers separated at birth, we both seem to have similar experiences, attitudes and opinions! :-)

hi nancy, i recommend that you learn the basics with billy blanks

and one of his taebo instructionals. he moves slowly and

explains everything. his book is really good for learning form

too... your local library might have it (mine does!)

i do NOT do this 'pump' thing, it kills my lower back! i do

tuck, in a way, and hold it for the workout, but it is not as

exaggerated as chalene and friends do it. it is more of a

tightening of the lower abs and butt.

>I think I prefer athletic, kickboxing drill type workouts better

tae-bo! tae-bo! tae-bo! LOL

i think that TJ is really fun, and i luv chalene, but i did

already knew how to kickbox before doing her workouts.

thats not silly! i really like your daily calorie burn goal.

personally, ive found that to be really helpful each day.

i havent been wearing my HRM lately though, because i know my

numbers. for example, my daily power walk is around 300 cals.

if i add on a 30 min strength training workout to that, and

then some sort of stretch, i can hit 500 each day and find it to

be quite do-able, physically. but of course, really fitting

all of that into each day is the challenge! LOL

This is very helpful info, Carolyn - thanks! I've acquired a handful

of Tae Bo tapes recently, and all Kassia's talk of heavy bags and

stuff has really got me thinking. I'm betting I could rig up a heavy

bag on some sort of slider in the rafters my workout room, so I could

push it off to the side when I'm not using it, LOL!

Good to know that Tae Bo is a good beginner step for TJ. I have the

instruction video, so I'll keep that in mind!

, about the TJ L & B. I take Turbo Kick at my local gym and I also

have all the TJ videos. One of the things my TK instructor tells us

is to give it at least 3 tries. The tucks will become second nature

in no time. I've been doing Tk and TJ for 2 years and I still find I

have a hard time engaging my core toward the end of the workout.

Sometimes when I just standing around in my kitchen...or watching

tv...I practice some of the kicks, just so my brain starts connecting

with my muscles more. :)

> Well, I finally did TJ Learn & Burn. I've had it on my schedule for

a few weeks. I'm not sure when is the last time I tried this workout

but I know it was sometime in 2007 so probably close to a year ago or

so. I tried it a few times then and just could not get it at all.

Today was better. It helped that I've done other kickboxing workouts

now and that I've built up my frustration tolerance too! I can see

why people like this. It is very high energy, Chalene is delightful,

the music is really good and I can see it being good for burning

calories. I liked it but I found it difficult to follow often.

Chalene teaches a 12 minute segment on her Elite 11 moves first.

They're done slowly and she demonstrates then has you do it. She also

combines a move with another common element (like a punch) to let you

get the feel for it. Then you do the 15 minute workout. I was very

thankful for Beachbody's workout timer at the bottom of the screen

because it kept me from giving up after the first 7 minutes!

The " Burn " workout combines all the Elite 11 moves at tempo and the

tempo is FAST plus she throws in kicks which are not taught in

the " Learn " section and more punches too. She starts doing the kicks

and then slows down to show them then speeds up again. She queues

very well, which is a big help, but I felt like I couldn't keep up

with the moves a lot of the time because I hadn't mastered the basics

and did the Hands, Arms, Wrists and Shoulders (or something like

that) practice off the beginner menu under 30 minutes. This was the

first time I've done this and I should have watched it first. There

were a few postures that she moved in and out of repeatedly without

queuing to move and since I couldn't see the TV because of the

position I was in I didn't know until I craned my neck to see what

she was doing. Overall I liked this one though I didn't feel like I

got a lot from it, need to do it again sometime to see if I get more

out of it. By the time I got done with that I'd burned 175 calories

but me liking my round hundreds had to keep going so I was going to

watch Crunch The Joy of Yoga while I ran in place but had to watch it

rewind because the person I'd gotten it from didn't rewind it. I ran

in place, did 50 jumping jacks in a row (and could have done more but

wanted to check my HRM, I'm shocked I was able to do that many and

not feel totally winded) and other things and got to 200 then stopped

and stretched my legs a bit more! Silly, I know but it was still

meaningful to me.

Do those 3 tries have to be all within a certain amount of time?? I tried once about a year ago, then again last week... not sure when the 3rd time will be yet! :-)

I know what you're saying though and definitely practicing the movements helps make that muscle memory more automatic. I used to play competitive tennis and would very often be seen practicing some of my strokes in all kinds of places and times, it helped a lot too! That said, I think I need to do the workout a few more times before I even work on the movements in my kitchen or elsewhere. Thanks for the tips Kim!

That's another video I've been thinking about getting back to ('s instructional video)... now I have more reason to I guess. I did see the book at my library last week and considered taking it out, maybe I will when we go back on Thursday. I tighten my abs pretty well, glad to hear another person ignoring the pump. I got the point too about being more athletic than dancey so I'll put the instructional video into my rotation for next week probably! :-)

I know what you're saying about fitting in the workouts for the calorie burn. I'm loving doing these more intense workouts and burning at least 300 calories in an hour or less and would love to burn even more but just having an hour for a workout is hard enough some days! Glad to hear I'm not the only one motivated like that.

I'll let you know when I pull out again!
