Guest guest
forwarded with permission from another list, orignially posted by a semi-recovered (his words) 47yr old man with autism and immune problems: As much as anything else, this is a story about gross negligence of the medical establishment.Negligence and stupidity.Three months ago,I marked the 40th anniversary of my being diagnosed with autism.I was in the first grade at the time.No thought was given at the time,to the relationship,of ASDs,to acute infections in early childhood, and the autoimmune reactions of same. I had acute bacterial meningitis, and pneumonia, when I was a baby, and spent my 5th,6th,and 7th month of life in the hospital. My mother was told there would be complications, but the doctors at the hospital did not tell her what they would be.I developed hemianopia in my left eye.I had serious delays in almost every area of development, except speech.I was profoundly autistic.I had chronic ear infection well into my 40s.Chronic pneumonia.Inflammatory bowel disease, beginning at age five.Recurring meningitis.Rheumatic fever at age seven, that developed into chronic heart, joint, and lung disease in that order. On top of all that,I never experienced puberty.Only now,do I understand the neuroendocrine reasons behind this. I saw doctor after doctor, year after year trying to receive a diagnosis, and treatment for my assorted health conditions, with no luck at all.Only rarely did I ever meet a doctor, who thought it was at all unusual,to see somebody in their 20s,30s,40s,whose body had grown to a reasonable adult height, without experiencing puberty.Basically a 5'8' child. But if these doctors thought it noteworthy, they never thought it worth changing.Nor did any doctor I ever see connect the dots from neuroendocrine deficiency, and autoimmune disease.I had to figure all this out on my own,as well as finding the alternative healthcare products to effectively treat my assorted sundry conditions. I had made great progress on my immune problems, but there was a lot of neurological problems I had not been able to reverse. Two months ago,I had three major seizures, immediately followed by an acute flareup of meningitis. My sister is also epileptic(Not to mention schizophrenic.) ,and I want to see her neurologist.I had a CT done,of my brain, and I found evidence of many subacute/subclinical seizures, over a period of years,if not decades. I immediately went online, and began researching treatments for seizure disorders, and cognitive decline, and immediately stumbled on GABA,and L-glutamine,which I have to buy online, from people who sell body-building supplements. Now I understand why.Within days, after starting on them,my seizures stopped. The next week,my brain fog lifted, for the first time decades. Then,I began to notice I was able to put together truly rational thoughts, for the first time in my life. And not just occasionally,or one or two here and there, but all of the time.It feels weird. My impulsiveness is gone, and I can see the results of what I do.I actually tell somebody if I am going out,and where. The other day,I actually felt empathy for another person. It felt weird. Well you get the picture. The most recent developments are neuroendocrine.I noticed yesterday,my voice is starting to change.I am just noticing the first, fine sproutings of body hair, and I have to shave every other day.Not once a month. At almost 47 years of age,I am growing up.I wonder if this means,I will live an extra 20-30 years than " normal " ?Also,I finally understand how people can " outgrow " severe diseases, once all of the normal hormones kick in. Guest guest
Thanks Natasa for forwarding this. I love hearing these stories of these brave and determined people who, despite their considerable difficulties, have battled against all the odds and come up trumps. I wish we could see them on every news stand in the country. I would really like to get in touch with this fella. Is it possible you could put me in touch with him?
