Guest guest
Hello to those of you who missed my introduction yesterday. My question for today: What synergy have you noticed between top notes and bottom notes? I was thinking, although top notes dissipate long before base notes, they seem capable of changing the fragrance of a bottom note for its entire duration. My favorite example is how galbanum combines with labdanum. Is this a valid observation? What other top notes do you think have a long-lasting effect on any particular base? Guest guest
I usually aim for top and middle notes that are similar...that way you have more consistency in the scent as the top notes fade. But ingredients do also combine and create new notes that may be quite different from the original components. Galbanum is a particularly interesting oil in it's effect on others. Guest guest
Yes, although galbanum is classified as a top note because it does, indeed, present itself early and strongly, it is so permeating as to impart its scent to a perfume all the way down to the base, in my opinion. I agree that it seems prudent to choose well-matched top and bottom notes, but as you say, there is some magic at work when seemingly incongruent notes are combined to form whole new scents. Although I don't know chemistry very well, in my mind I can imagine the electrons in the outer valences forming new connections with one another with who-knows-what result. Thanks Ambrosia. Anyone else have an opinion on what top and bottom notes form synergistic combinations?
