Guest guest
: Wouldn't it be great if we could keep both the insurance from the Company and SSDI, but we don't. Bad thing about mine is that the Company long-term disability stops when I turn 65 yrs. old, (in 10 yrs.) - that's really going to hurt at a time that I'd probably need it more, and I'll only have SSDI. Guest guest
Well, I was *excited* that my LTD (long-term disability) will actually go until I'm 65 ! lol Of course, I'm only 43 now. It is disappointing that you can't receive both, though. I mean, if I *don't* get approved for SSDI, MetLife will still pay me 67% of my salary. If I *get* SSDI, I'll still only get 67% of salary so, basically, all my SSDI goes to MetLife. I have no real incentive to get SSDI at this point. Of course, MetLife does and they have a slew of attorneys waiting to help which is good. But really MetLife is the only one that benefits by me getting SSDI. I can't complain, though. 67% of salary is great. I really feel for folks like who are having problems getting disability. My cousin who is *so* much worse than I am can't get anything from SSA and she's been trying for years. She has CMT1A and diabetes and is mostly in a scooter! I'm wondering if she's giving them enough information. I think I should probably see if I can help her. I think submitting *all* pertinent medical information is very important to ensure a right decision. My form only requested information for the past two years but if I'd only sent that in, there wouldn't have been much. With a slow progressive disease, two years isn't always adequate information...so I just sent in about 8 years worth...back to when I had NCVs and a diagnosis. -- also in Texas near Houston
Guest guest
: You have just stated something that has sent me through the ceiling. I was on short-term disability through my work and also filed SSDI. They both worked together to come up with my total figure. Are you saying if I didn't file wth SSDI I would have 67% of my salary from my Employer? I'm screammmmmmmming ---- can you hear me in Houston. You are right about submitting more and all information having a progressive disease. I had records when I had surgery at 12 all the way through the existing fall that broke my left leg and put me in AFOs at 39, other sprains. At that point I went and became an MDA patient, over the course of the next five years or so, they were on board when they suggested it was time for a scooter or wheelchair and it was time to conserve my strength for my function for daily living. I also showed brochures to my doctors on a piece of equipment called a Health Rider that my husband used and they told me to save my strength and not use it on a piece of equipment ! I also worked solid for 24 yrs. with only 2 wks. vacation, and filed while I was on short-term disability through work and had a continuous work record. I need to know if I could have had 67% of my salary if I didn't file with SSDI. Oh my, I'm just sick about this information. Your cousin needs help through an MDA Clinic, if she's not already a patient. One of the most important things that I missed was getting a policy of my own to cover loss of income - I didn't think of those things when I was young. It is so important for your children to have this to carry them to the time when they can't work and can have a decent income (or whenever they start to work to mention to them to get a disability policy OF THEIR OWN). Guest guest
Donna B., nononononono...Don't be upset! I am receiving that amount because my company has paid into disability insurance for me all the years that I've worked. It's *their* program. You wouldn't be able to get that unless you worked for my company. My company paid the premiums for a 50% of salary disability insurance plan...I subsidized out of pocket to increase the coverage to 67% (because I knew I *might* need it someday). I've been very fortunate to work for such a great company. And yes, I *did* hear you screaming in Houston...so, stop it now! I need to get some sleep! lol Seriously, I'm sorry if my previous post was confusing and caused you any distress!
