Guest guest
Thanks. I sometimes doubt the caliper because I always thought you had to be ripped to be in the teens?? I am getting firmer but definitely have a way to go for better definition. I have to flex pretty good for any definition to be seen (especially my belly...but it is there, lurking). Once I get a new bathing suit I'll send some pics. My body is not close at all to the last two girls who just posted, so I am a littler nervous to even send my picture out. Ekkk! (You guys did so good, by the way!!!) Thanks for all the encouragement. God Bless, Re: Week 12 Stats Great job! Congratulations on breaking into the teens on body fat percentage. Guest guest
I know what you mean about the BF%. and I had ours done at 24 Hour Fitness and I swear they tell you it is way higher than what it is so you will feel depressed and hire a personal trainer. We just had them taken again after our 12 weeks and they still said we were pretty high. They said I was 25%. I was really disappointed but, I am not sure if that is right or not. Perhaps I do need to lose a lot more fat to get it down lower. Either that or they are off. I am going tomorrow to a couple of bodybuilding personal trainers that I know, and have it redone and see what they say. Hopefully, it will be lower than what 24 Hour Fitness said, I will let you know. But, I do know I need to work on my stomach more and get rid of that layer of fat. But, you shouldn't feel bad about posting your pictures, I am sure they are not as bad as you think they are. You are probably just your own toughest critic. How can they be that bad, with measurements like that?! Congratulations and thanks for the compliment. We have been workiing hard. We don't have results like some of those women in the BFL book, but nevertheless, we are pleased, and look forward to see what changes the 2nd challenge brings. Guest guest
How did 24 Hour Fitness test you? That number does seem pretty high looking at your pictures. The tricky thing is that body fat percentages can look totally different on two different people. Not all people with body fat in the teens are ripped and well defined. And plenty of people with body fat in the 20s are firm and have nice definition and don't look as though they need to lose any weight. Here's a post about why percentages look different on everyone: ~~ body fat percentages will look different on everybody. Even if two people have the exact same percentage, they could carry it radically differently. Height, weight, age, frame size, body type, musculature, bone density and even skin elasticity will change the way things look. Say you have two people who are 5'5 " 125 pounds and 15% body fat. One of them is 30, pear shaped with small bone structure, light musculature, and has dieted her way there from 175 pounds. One of them is a 20 year old college rower who's a natural mesomorph with a large bone structure, wide shoulders and obvious muscles. In both cases, they weigh 125 pounds and 15% of their total body weight is fat, but the visual going to be waaaaay different. And that's if their height and weight is the same. You can imagine how squirrely it gets if you start trying to compare somebody who's 5'2 " and 110 pounds with somebody who's 5'9 " and 150 pounds. They might look exactly alike at 18% body fat. OR, one of them could have a small light bone structure with large muscles and look very athletic and cut, and one of them could have big dense bones with small muscles and look very smooth and flat. OR one of them could be an apple shape who carries the majority of that fat in her abs while the other one is a pear shape and has a totally ripped upper body but no definition in her legs. Once you've looked at a whole slew of people at varying heights, weights and body fat percentages, you can start to make a reasonable guestimate as to what someone's body fat might be, but the visual isn't ever going to be foolproof. It's why some fitness and figure competitors can walk onstage at 12% body fat and look fabulous while others need to hit 7% to achieve the same definition and muscularity. Fitness pros will always tell you that it's about the look and not about the numbers. > > I know what you mean about the BF%. and I had ours done at 24 > Hour Fitness and I swear they tell you it is way higher than what it is > so you will feel depressed and hire a personal trainer. Guest guest
They use the Durnin/Womersley formula. I don't know if you are familiar with that one, or if it is even any good, but basically here is how they do it.... The locations: 1) Scapula fold: A diagonal fold on the back, at the lower edge of the scapula. Angle of inclination should be 45°, clockwise. 2) Triceps fold: A vertical fold at mid of the upper arms backside. 3) Biceps fold: A vertical fold at the upper arms frontside, half way between shoulder and ellbow. 4) Hip fold: A diagonal fold straight over the pelvis, close to the navel. Angle of inclination should be 30°, clockwise. The formula: S = Sum of all four folds A = age in years d = 1,1714 - 0.063 * log(S) - 0.000406*A Bodyfat [%] = 495 / d - 450 I haven't done much research on what is most accurate. How does this look? I am having it redone by someone else tomorrow, but I am not sure what method they use either. They are bodybuilders, so I am sure they try to have the most accurate thing. Anyway, I am glad you think it is high. and I thought it was high too. Thanks for the post about bf% looking different on different body types, that was very interesting. Guest guest
25% does seem high after looking at your pictures. I would have guessed you were in the teens. Now, with that said, I have my in-laws take mine. But my MIL has been a fitness instructor for 10+ years so I will assume she is taking it correctly. All I know is that they measured the back of my arm like 5 times and it hurt like crap but the reading was about the same each time...lol! Guest guest
Its just a number!!...I hate my electric BF device. It gives me all kinds of different readings and frustrates the h-e-double hockey sticks out of me. Its worse than using the scale. Doing your own measurements with the tape measure and calipers is the best way to stay CONSISTANT and track progress w/out messing with your head. Keep the measurements and compare. Dont plug them into any one of the 100's of BF formulas. Take pictures! Deanna Re: Week 12 Stats How did 24 Hour Fitness test you? That number does seem pretty high looking at your pictures. Guest guest
, I'm a little slow on the posting... but congrats! You and your friend look great and made some awesome progress. Everything looks so much leaner, tighter.... you girls look buff! Don't worry so much about numbers... long as you feel good, look hot and are healthy and fit... who cares what that number says. (which by the way, looks too high from the looks of your fitness levels). Keep up the great work! > > > > 25% does seem high after looking at your pictures. Guest guest
gentle_reign, Thannks for the compliments. Your transformation is quite impressive itself. It was fun to have a workout partner and really motivating. When she gets back from vacation we are going to start a second challenge and see what we can do on the second one. I can't wait. You are right about numbers, that is all they are. Yet, somehow I always seem to get caught up in them. My scale weight didn't change at all, which I have to fight myself about, but I know that muscle weighs more than fat. I did lose inches and true to what I thought, I had my BF % taken again, and it was considerably lower than what 24 Hour Fitness said. They said I was at 25% whereas the bodybuilders that took them Friday said just under 18%. Which does make me feel better, but I do need to take your advice and stop worrying about numbers and focus on how much better I feel. Anyway, all I can say for all the girls just starting and or half way through, KEEP GOING, DON'T GET DISCOURAGED! I didn't start seeing any real drastic changes until week 10 and 12. And many times I wanted to give up, but I stuck to it, and I feel so happy that I accomplished it! Before, I never ever would have thought about doing it again, but my whole attitude has changed and I want to keep going! So work hard, and be consistant and you will be rewarded and don't be like me and freak about numbers, go off your measurements and how you look and feel. Keep up the good work! Guest guest
- Thanks for this post. Because as I enter week 10 I am struggling. I have had a few bad food choices this week - but Monday I am hitting week 10 hard. When you said what did about changes happening in weeks 10 - 12 I NEEDED THAT TODAY! Thank you again and HAPPY EASTER! ~B missyblueeyes11 wrote: gentle_reign, Thannks for the compliments. Your transformation is quite impressive itself. Guest guest
I was just checking the last week's posts and figured I will post my stats for my first challenge. I just got back from vacation, so who knows what I have gained back, I am so bloated feeling. I went from feeling GREAT to a big blob. Oh well, Monday I will start on my second challenge....so here's my measurements... Jan 1 April 1 bicep 10.5 10 chest didn't measure, but went down 2 cup sizes!! Ribs 28 26 waist 29.5 26 hips 35.5 32.5 thigh 23.5 22 butt 39 37 weight 148 136 24 hour fitness did my bodyfat--and who knows how incorrect it is, but I began at 34% and ended at 28% So atleast it shows I went down. So now I am mentally preparing myself for this next challenge and I am so ready after my week away! By the way, as most women do, I saw my results from week 8-10 it really started showing up. So hang in there!!!
