Guest guest Posted December 29, 2006 Report Share Posted December 29, 2006 My doctor had mentioned that dry mouth, which is a medical condition, can mimic signs of thirst. People feel their mouth is a little under-wet (for lack of a better word) and feel they are wanting liquids. These folks often are chronically thirsty to one degree or another. Another cause of excessive thirst is diabetes. There are some other causes as well including thirst as a side effect of some medications. I would think you may want to find out why your always so thirsty before moving along. Intake of too much water can actually cause an electrolyte imbalance. This is where " water poisoning " comes from. While one gallon certainly isn't a problem, two would be awfully close for comfort. It would make sense that creatine would make you more thirsty than normal though, particularly in the first week or two, since it is pulling more fluids into the tissues. This means the body demands are higher. However, I would THINK that after the first week or two your body should adjust to this. Deanna Creatine Issue I've tried taking creatine (Betagen) for one week back in April but I had an issue with it: it makes me INSANELY thirsty! I'm naturally thirsty 24/7 and can easily drink 1 gallon of water on a freezing cold day that I spend laying around (i.e. no water loss from sweat or anything) so on a workout day when I do actually sweat or on a super hot day (which are common down here in FL) I come very close to 2 gallons of water without trying, that's just to quench my own thirst. Guest guest Posted December 29, 2006 Report Share Posted December 29, 2006 and Deanna: Adult onset diabetes does run in my father's side of the family so I get checked for that in my annual check up. I guess I should explain that I don't get that dry mouth thirst that means you're already dehydrated, I just feel a little thirsty all the time so I constantly drink water (makes getting my gallon in very easy). I've drank a lot of water since I was a baby (my mom says she had to give me bottles of just water all the time in addition to bottles of milk). I'm most comfortable with drinking 1-1.5 gallons a day during the cooler times of the year, and in the summer I end up drinking to 2 gallons. I'm down in Florida so it gets pretty hot, plus DH and I keep our apartment at 80 degrees in the spring and summer (or else our electric bill gets crazy) so I sweat a lot. My work office is always hot too because it's a drafty old building; it's about 80-82 degrees plus I have to wear business attire (and it's cold in the winter, luckily it doesn't get that cold here). So I'm not worried about the amount of water I tend to need on a daily basis, but the amount I needed while taking the creatine that one week was scary! I actually had the dry mouth thirst and could literally not drink enough water to get rid of it. That's when I was up past 2 gallons of water. I know that the creatine pulls water into the muscles so that I'd need more water, but I figured maybe a couple of extra cups of water. It made me pee like crazy too, so it felt like all that extra water was getting peed out instead of going into my muscles. When I started the Betagen, I took just 1 scoop of it mixed in a cup of water after my BFL weight lifting workouts and my HIIT, so I only took 1 scoop per day for 6 of the days (I didn't take any on my rest day since I hadn't worked out). Is that the wrong way to take it?
