ginseng is a great example of this. In the mid 90's it was the in thing. Walmart

had displays all over and friends touted how it helped their energy and

depression. That was until the powers that be realized it was loaded with

ephedra. Now it is a nothing herb. Good for causing nausea.

The final week before going to the doc I was down to oatmeal chicken and soup.

Is that probiotic pill something I could take long term if needed?

Yogurt has many of the same "good" bacteria found in probiotic pills. Sometimes it is easier to have a pill when traveling, but yogurt and the occasional probiotic pill works wonders for my family when the stomach bug rears its head.mom of 5To: hyperaldosteronism Sent: Sat,

Gotcha. Well it has helped my stomach and kept me out of the restroom. I would prefer not to take a pill if not needed but if I continue to have stomach problems would this be a alternative. Could be meds or healthy eating for once...

people should read about them, but don't. That's the point. Walmart and many

many others touted ginseng as helping stress and depression and as a pick me up.

It was. . .but only because it was loaded with ephedra. And it nearly sunk into

oiblivion once the fda realized that ginseng, and many other " herbs " were loaded

with it too. Most I bet had no idea about the ephedra, just that it didn't work

anymore and stopped taking it.

because it was an herb and touted as natural

it was accepted at face value by many and was likely MORE dangerous than many a

" big pharma's " medicines- again many turn to so called natural medicines

because, well I have a few theories after hearing so many people over the years,

they don't trust modern meds andin my opinion there is this sense of " i

conquered those rich greedy doctors " as in the " i knew what worked " not them.

I jave said forever to friends, patients, colleagues, that at the end of the day

it is the $ deposited into our account. Some seem to have this impression that

" natural " companes have our best interests at heart because they are not those

filthy rich doctors or pharma, but they have their interest and found their own

niche...ie. . .market to sell too.

Ut you are so correct that anything we take we should do our homework about.

You know I hink of how I felt over the past. Gosh I don't even know for sure,

5-6 years and since my 11/10 PA dx it was for me, not counting the HTN, and

referring to the fatigue, breathlessness, etc, it was as simple as taking K . .

.. . And DASH of course.

BTW what does dandelion do?

I believe in the hands of a skilled practitioner herbs are as good as or better

then many drugs. Problem is today there aren't many in the US that have the

skills needed to prescribe them. This includes the so called alternative medical

Dr. They may have studied what herbs a few years and claim to know what herbs do

there knowledge is some what limited.

The knowledge that our great grandmas knew came from almost a life time of there

studying what others before them had studied. They had no choice of using RX

meds as not many MD's went to where lived nor could they travel to a MD.

ephedra seems to have a safer profile elsewhere and the chimese don't show alot

The record you want to hear is that they have been properly studied and show to make people healthier.CE Grim MDThere are several types of ginsing, but I think the problem with many herbs sold in stores is that it is really an extract of the actual herb. Ephedra is actually a separte herb - Ma Huang is another name by which it is known. When I was diagnosed with HTN in 2004 I started reading and studying about herbs and their uses. People need to read more than an ad in Wal-mart to determine their need for a certain herb, but IMHO they have their place. Most of us use many herbs in our daily life without thinking about it - peppermint, thyme, sage, rosemary etc. Some are stronger and less well known in our country and in our century, but still have their place. A dr. dispenses meds after much research by himself and pharmaceutical companies. Herbalists do the same. Yes, there are many corporations trying to profit from herbs by selling the hype, but many herbs are naturally occuring (dandelion for example) and have many uses that our great grandmas knew, but have been lost in the last 100 years. You can believe but I am from Missouri and must be shown. Show me the data.CE Grim MDI believe in the hands of a skilled practitioner herbs are as good as or better then many drugs. Problem is today there aren't many in the US that have the skills needed to prescribe them. This includes the so called alternative medical Dr. They may have studied what herbs a few years and claim to know what herbs do there knowledge is some what limited. The knowledge that our great grandmas knew came from almost a life time of there studying what others before them had studied. They had no choice of using RX meds as not many MD's went to where lived nor could they travel to a MD. > >>> >> >> >> > > > > >>> >>> >> >> >> > > > > >>> >>> >> >> >> > > > > >> msmith1928,> >>> >> >> >> > > > > >>> >>> >> >> >> > > > > >> I am afriad that I don't have much to offer you. YADAYADYADA and humbug. CE Grim MDOn Jun 1, 2011, at 10:14 AM, Francis Bill SUSPECTED PA wrote:BTW what does dandelion do?---Medicinal Action and Uses---Diuretic, tonic and slightly aperient. It is a general stimulant to the system, but especially to the urinary organs, and is chiefly used in kidney and liver disorders. Dandelion is not only official but is used in many patent medicines. Not being poisonous, quite big doses of its preparations may be taken. Its beneficial action is best obtained when combined with other agents. The tincture made from the tops may be taken in doses of 10 to 15 drops in a spoonful of water, three times daily. It is said that its use for liver complaints was assigned to the plant largely on the doctrine of signatures, because of its bright yellow flowers of a bilious hue. In the hepatic complaints of persons long resident in warm climates, Dandelion is said to afford very marked relief. A broth of Dandelion roots, sliced and stewed in boiling water with some leaves of Sorrel and the yolk of an egg, taken daily for some months, has been known to cure seemingly intractable cases of chronic liver congestion. A strong decoction is found serviceable in stone and gravel: the decoction may be made by boiling 1 pint of the sliced root in 20 parts of water for 15 minutes, straining this when cold and sweetening with brown sugar or honey. A small teacupful may be taken once or twice a day. Dandelion is used as a bitter tonic in atonic dyspepsia, and as a mild laxative in habitual constipation. When the stomach is irritated and where active treatment would be injurious, the decoction or extract of Dandelion administered three or four times a day, will often prove a valuable remedy. It has a good effect in increasing the appetite and promoting digestion. Dandelion combined with other active remedies has been used in cases of dropsy and for induration of the liver, and also on the Continent for phthisis and some cutaneous diseases. A decoction of 2 OZ. of the herb or root in 1 quart of water, boiled down to a pint, is taken in doses of one wineglassful every three hours for scurvy, scrofula, eczema and all eruptions on the surface of the body. > >>> >> >> >> > > > > >>> >>> >> >> >> > > > > >>> >>> >> >> >> > > > > >> msmith1928,> >>> >> >> >> > > > > >>> >>> >> >> >> > > > > >> I am afriad that I don't have much to offer you. my chiropractor buddy touts herbs and chinese medicine - he's hawaiin chinese -

and rales against modern medicine. But one leaves his office with a bagful of

herbal concoctions he mixes and dispenses - with no label on them AND they

aren't free but more than the average co pay. The one that sells the best is the

one " prescribed " the most. How ironic. He acts like an MD but considers himself

an expert in " natural medicine " .

My issue with most naturopaths and chiropractors is that they 100% of 100% of

the time they FIND the problem even if you come in without one (consumer reports

in the mid 90's had over 500 undercover visit to chiros and the final paragraph

of their multiyear study stated that their big concern was exactly that - that

they ALWAYS found a problem even when the patient denied one). That and they say

" i know exactly what's wrong and I can fix it! "

another friend is an natural nutritionist (went to some school fo it) and her

and her husband always tell everyone how she cured " many cases of cancer " . She

never mentions the ones who she didn't cure but I bet if I ask her they likely

" didn't listen " to her. I have met many a iridiologist, rolfer, faith healers,

in these small communities I have worked in and they all have anectodal evidence

of curing cancers. But curing 1/100 is in the margin of chance and they likely

did nothing. Now maybe they did, I am not a complete non believer in natural

means but I am in how they are presented and exploited for gain (money or

prestige). There's orneriness in all of us.....but ......i like odds and science

if done honestly. Anecdotal stories though say that there are exceptions, but

they aren't the rule.

one other thing about some of these quack medicines out there like airborne,

some of those herbs, and many other natural cures is that IF they worked as well

as some tout, the big pharmacies would spare no expense to get them under their

umbrella or buy up every st johns wort plant in the world. That to me is a

sorry commentary to me that the evidence is stronger that they DON't perform as

well as others claim. But I also hold big pharm to the same attitude . . . .

.. . I believe SSRI's are the biggest scam EVER taking advantage of emotionally

bankrupt and desperate for help people. We should rename them " nohopamine! "

.. . . . . Okay my diatribe for the week....sorry...

better then many drugs. Problem is today there aren't many in the US that have

the skills needed to prescribe them. This includes the so called alternative

medical Dr. They may have studied what herbs a few years and claim to know what

herbs do there knowledge is some what limited.

>>

>> The knowledge that our great grandmas knew came from almost a life time of

there studying what others before them had studied. They had no choice of using

RX meds as not many MD's went to where lived nor could they travel to a MD.

Thanks for posting the info. I just packed my herb book up today! My mother in law actually has picked them out of her yard and sauteed with olive oil and garlic. When we lived in MA the regular grocery story sold them next to the other greens. My personal herb of choice is garlic. I have use a whole clove put into the ear - placed not shoved - into a child's ears to clear an ear infection. It works very well and my ten year old will get her own clove if her ear starts to hurt. My nephew even had fluid drain from his ear using this method. He had tubes and had been on many rounds of antibiotic, but was visiting 1000 miles away for a wedding. Friday afternoon and no dr. was open. Thought he would miss out on rehearsal dinner. 20 min

of garlic held to his ear and his ear drained and he felt fine both that night and the next day. My husband and I eat it raw when we feel that we are getting sick. Once when pregnant I had a horrible sinus infection. Dr. would not give me antibiotics and I was in excruciating pain - I never ask for meds, but I was in terrible pain. I taped a clove over each sinus and slept in a recliner. I awoke and felt 80 % better. The next day I was totally better.I have read that during WW I (pre-penicillin) garlic farmers in Australia were not allowed to enlist in the army as they needed the garlic so much. Apparently army used it as it is a "natural" antibiotic. Since garlic is sold in the grocery story most people are not scared of it (except maybe the smell) they way they would be something less well known. Some herbs like dandelion could be used every day and some are more powerful. Knowledge

is power. To: hyperaldosteronism Sent: Wed, June 1, 2011 11:14:11 AMSubject: Re: probiotic

BTW what does dandelion do?

---Medicinal Action and Uses---Diuretic, tonic and slightly aperient.

I think it is because we super size everything. We think if some is good more is better. Not always so!To: hyperaldosteronism Sent: Wed, June 1, 2011 5:33:35 PMSubject: Re: Re: probiotic

Also worth mentioning is that we latched onto ephedra as a weight loss solution.

In Chinese medicine it's used for treating things like colds. As a weight loss

drug, I'd assume the instructions were to take it all the time, probably in

pretty large doses. Using it to treat cold symptoms would be as needed (it

clears the nasal passages, as any of us who have ever used Sudafed know).

I have 2 kids with asthma and used ephedra (low dose) a couple of times and it

worked better than anything....but shhhh...my nurse bought some overseas years

ago.
