I want to start Edith on a probiotic. I would prefer powder so that I don't add to her pills (I know I could always open caps). I would like B subtilis in it because DeFelice says it's a good place to start. I was considering BioKult -- hellish expensive -- has anyone used it? The other poss I'm aware of is Primal Defense (as per Mandimart fractionally less expensive). Anyone got any views?xxSally

Sally, we use Bio-Kult with good results. I've used it now for a year. It seems to be one of the cheaper ones! Nutricentre have them 3 bottles of 60 for £32.85 with your 25% TA discount that's not too bad at about 14p per capsule. The Klaire Therbiotics works out to be about 43p per capsule with the discount!! I don't think there are any inexpensive probios really. We also use BioCare bioacidophilus which is cheaper than either of those but I just don't see the results from it like I do the Therbiotics and Bio-Kult.

HTH, not sure if I've said anything useful...!

A pot of primal defence last ages. Can't say I have heard of this one is talking about..........

They are both good stuff, good probiotics don't come cheap

It's a bacteria which is in both of them. You know what is like -- it's the sort of thing they give pigs. Actually she says it's a sort of sewage digester -- it's transient so she says start with it and it may clean the grot out of your insides. Then move onto something more pleasant sounding to replace the grot with good bugs. That's her theory as I grasped it complete with mental picture of pig sewage.

>>Chap at DAN pointed out all probiotiocs are transient.

Not sure what is special about this one. Biokult and PD are SBO's (Soil Based Organisms) so more transient than others and good choice IMHO.

BioKult - its great stuff IMHO and tastes better than PD but I use both of them with Sacc B and CP1 and occasional Culturelle

Hi Sally

We have been using BioKult for nearly 3 years with good results. We did about 9 months only using BioKult and then added in others such as CP1, and Culterelle.

We had to start quite low at only half a capsule every other day and then gradually build up. I think others may say that they started even lower than this. Low and slow is the answer with probiotics. The maker of BioKult will happily talk to you on the phone if you want advice. He is the husband of Natasha McBride who wrote Gut and Psychology Syndrome.

I find BioKult to be one of the least expensive probiotics and give it to my NT son as well.

Good luck with what you chose.

Kay.

Yes it's very helpful, thanks. It's not really cheap if it doesn't work

is it? What sort of results do you see from BK and Klaire? Do you rotate

them? The Biokult site seems to say that its £32 for one bottle. Maybe

I've got that wrong or the Nutricentre has got a very good deal. They

sound like the ones to me

Is the primal defense supposed to be hard, like you have to scrape it up with a scoop to get some out?Mine is, and I'm wondering if it's still good.

ARRRGHHH! That's what I was afraid of. I just wrote the Garden of

Life people to ask them if they think it would still be good.

Fingers crossed for the hardy bugs :-)

If I remember, I ordered my first bottle from the biokult site and it was far more expensive than nutricentre. Go figure. I do rotate them as seems to get a bit irritable if I don't. He can tolerate about 3 days on one and then I give another. I also noticed that his stools would *deteriorate* after he'd been on the same one for a while so rotating them keeps his stools in better *shape* (for lack of a better descriptor!)

The probios made a huge difference in his stools - they sorted out a lifelong (only 2 years old though) problem with horrible acrid loose stools. I can only assume that they also improved his nutritional state as the quality of his stools was so vastly improved. They went from yellow to brown in a week or so. He brightened up and was just generally a happier chappie. I have to watch it though as when I give him too high probios they seem to make him unhappy - it's a constant balancing act.

I can give him a whole Bio-Kult but a whole Therbiotics gives him constipation unless his stools are already loose to start with.

Good luck!

Oh it's interesting that he says they are all transient. I thought some

were supposed not to be. There's a list somewhere of

transient/colonising with the implication that the colonising ones

replenish your gut. I thought that was the idea of using them or eating

yoghurt with antibiotics. However the idea that you need to keep giving

them argues the other way. I think B Subtilis is used in animal

husbandry to keep the animals insides clean so that there is a lot of

research about it and it's easily available so cheap. I will start with

Primal Defense because I want to use a powder. At the moment I feel I'm

constantly giving her handfuls of pills. She's being very good about it

but even so.

I thought about that so since I think I have always been lactose intolerant I

first cut out dairy then fruit then veggies. It actually got worse. The final

week before going to the doc I was down to oatmeal chicken and soup. Is that

probiotic pill something I could take long term if needed?

Gotcha. Well it has helped my stomach and kept me out of the restroom. I would

prefer not to take a pill if not needed but if I continue to have stomach

problems would this be a alternative. Could be meds or healthy eating for

once...

Some folks have gut problems with spiro. How much are you taking. Taking several times a day may help.CE Grim MDGotcha. Well it has helped my stomach and kept me out of the restroom. I would prefer not to take a pill if not needed but if I continue to have stomach problems would this be a alternative.
