Strength weight machines (no free weights)

Hey Ladies!! I posted this question almost three weeks ago. Am I

really the only person who uses weight machines? Wow!

Hi Lea :)

I started off using just machines at the gym and had great results. My

trainer said I was less likely to perform an exercise wrong using the

machines at the gym. My first routine went for about 8-10 weeks and after

that we started using a combination of machines and free weights. I've been

going to the gym for a year and a half now and still use machines for some

muscle groups. I know this doesn't really answer your question about

reaching goal using just machines but I wanted to say that I have had good

results using them. :)

I didn't answer because I haven't met my goal yet! LOL But I only use

the machines for now. I need to make an appointment with a trainer to

learn the free weights, so I can make sure I have good form, etc. But

right now, I've only used the machines, stability ball, and resistance

bands (ball and bands at home).

I use some of the machines, but not exclusively. I've gradually swapped

most of them for other (theoretically superior) exercises in the

free-weight area.

Free weights are probably in the majority here, because most are

following BFL by the book. But the gyms are filled with people who

only use machines with great results. I think a combination of the two

provides the best results. In terms of benefits, there are pros and

cons to both. I think the advantages free weights have over machines,

is their convenience, and greater improvement with balance and

coordination because other muscles are required when working any body

part. I mostly use machines for my lower body. Hope that helps.

Can I ask you why you are only using machines? Dont fear the free

I think that by using ANYTHING as a weight while exercising will

give you 'results' ... see home workouts http://tinyurl.com/czpj7

Machines give you the basic proper form/movement for each exercise

you do and do allow you to increase the weights in increments. But

overall, free weights give you more options for variety, and make

you use the supporting (stability) muscles to lift the weight that

you wont get with just machines. Machines 'lift' alot of the weight

for you as if you do the same/similar exercise with a bar or

dumbells, you will most likely have to do less until the supporting

muscles get stronger to compensate where the machines left off.

LOL!! Poor cat! Probably not a good idea to try this if the cat is liable

to scratch your face off if you try though ;)

I could never do that with my cat. She's a little fatty

and really needs to be on BFL for pets! I would end up

pulling something for sure.

Lea, it's all about intensity. There's even women body builders who

only use their own body weight resistance to build their body! So,

although I use dumbells, I'm sure that you can continue to use the

machines to change your body. Just do it slow and use perfect form.

Follow Bill's intensity guidelines (5-9, and that horrible 10!).

I just finished reading the replys to this question. Thanks ladies

for offering advice and suggestions. I may use the machines for my

next challenge, and mix up things with free weights next challenge.

Is there an easy way to carry free weights to the gym?

The neighborhood center I attend, only has machines. I have the

dumbells I need for a set or two(upper body), but I mostly use the

machines, so I couldn't follow the program by the book, if I split

up exercises at gym and home.

I thought of taking free weights with me to the gym, but a set of 3

different poundages would be too heavy. If there were an easy way to

transport them, that would be fine. The gym will let me bring the

weights for my workout, but won't allow me to leave them for a

variety of silly reasons.

Sounds to me like you've out-grown your gym.

For those of you thinking about joining a gym, use this as a

warning--even if machines are all you're interested in right now, you

just might change your mind later on and need a wider range of equipment.
