RE: Betagen vs. phosphogen

Phosphagen is good to use all the time. It's just plain creatine powder.

Betagen is creatine and lots of other more expensive goodies. The main

ingredient in both is creatine though, so either one will work. Just make

sure to buy plain Phosphagen and not the Elite or HP versions which are

loaded with sugar.

I dont know where the OP is buying her BetaGen, but it pays to shop

around. For example, at BodyBuilding.com its $48.89 for 90 servings

= .54 cents a serving. Not bad when you consider the extra

ingredients in it. Expensive? Or worth it? I vote for worth it and

here's why if you look at the individual ingredients and understand

what they do for you:

BetaGen is a combo of creatine, glutamine, taurine, B complex with

addtl vitamin C and E. Why are these important to someone who is

exhausting their muscles? Creatine 'works' only to hydrate your

muscles so that they are in an optimal state for recovery. No

biggie, but the other ingredients IMHO are really worth the extra

money. Glutamine, an amino acid, is not only an immune booster

(especially good right now for cold/flu season as a preventative

measure), it also helps maintain/preserve muscle by enhancing

glycogen storage(necessary for workout energy) and the best thing is

it totally aids in muscle recovery which means less muscle

soreness!!! Amen we all need that! Taurine, also an amino acid, is

associated with many neuromuscular functions on a cellular level and

is found in many energy drinks (RedBull for example). Anedoctal

findings over just science note that taurine seems to help

weight/fatloss - could be because as a key ingredient of bile, it in

turn is needed for fat digestion(emulsifying fats),and may also help

control cholesterol serum levels in the body.

Vitamin B/complex - when your body is under stress (from exercise

etc) you need extra VitB for energy purposes.

Vitamin C/E - both antioxidents, both boost your immune system.

I'd stick with the BetaGen - a MUCH better supplement than plain

phosphagen(creatine).

Betagen is great stuff. I used it for years and I totally agree with

everything Joni said, but my perspective has changed a little.

Two years ago I bought a $12 tub of Phosphagen on a whim. I wanted to start

taking creatine again immediately instead of waiting a few days for a

Betagen order. So, I bought some Phosphagen off the counter at the gym. I

took it home that day and put it in my post-workout shake. Do you know what

happened in the next two weeks? Everything that normally happens when I

start Betagen. I got the visible muscle pump, the bump in lean mass, the

increased strength, the faster recovery, the reduction in soreness, and I

thought... oh. :-)

Since then I've bought the no-frills Phosphagen two more times even though I

could afford either. I kind of like the fact that Phosphagen is not flavored

and you can mix it in anything. So, even though Betagen is truly fabulous

stuff, if all you're really after is the creatine, Phosphagen definitely

works.

Good points, but you also have to consider the actual amount of

each ingredient per serving. The creatine may be an adequate

maintenance dose, but the glutamine dosage is pretty low. As

for the other goodies, I'm not informed as to what is a significant

amount, but I would bet that what is in there is not. That is

pretty typical of most " everything but the kitchen sink " supplements

out there. I'm not saying its not good, just be aware of what you

are getting and don't compare apples to oranges.
