Sadly, my best friend and mother told me the program was a waste of time

the first few weeks of my initial challenge. When the results began to

show - I couldn't stop them from asking questions. Time will speak for

itself - let them doubt. Vickie

oh my goodness, i so totally agree.

i am having a few people ask what i am doing when i haul around bottles of water

and cans of tuna and when i tell them, or try to, they look at me like i am a

freak or like i have joined up with some crazy food and exercise cult. they are

BIG doubters and knowing they think this won't work just inspires me further. so

now when they ask how i've dropped a size i just tell them, " hard freaking

work. "

some of them have a general opinion that a good stay @ home mother would just

sort of settle for keeping some baby fat and start wearing bigger clothes every

day. i live in one of america's fattest cities. there is a weird overtone that i

am pursuing something based in pride ~ i guess that would be better than

gluttony...but i digress.

i was standing in a store the other day and i heard someone say, " oh look!

stretchy leggings are back! i don't have to unbutton my pants after lunch

anymore! " my oldest daughter looked at me in horror asking if people really did

that - " ummm yes, your mom used to... "

my mother in law said that she thought women should " embrace their curves " and

stay focused on pleased their husbands. also criticized that my kids spend " so

much " time in the child care at the gym (where they love it). she's very worried

that i don't make giant dinners for him when he gets home from work.

i was like, ummm, he is much more pleased then when i was going to bed at 8:30

after eating giant amounts of pasta - and believe me, the curves aren't going

anywhere :) he's happier than all of us at this point (wink).

Hi Amy and Vickie -

I hear you both loud and clear. In the past it hurt my

feelings when those I thought would support me, put obstacles in

my way or attempted to discourage me instead.

Now it just pisses me off(some anger is good), and reminds me of how

important boundaries are! No one can discourage us, unless we give

them permission and opportunity to do so in our lives.

My dreams and goals have become LARGE, and I want people around me

who will support those goals, or at least not spew limited

doubts and fears in my direction. :) Tikie

I love hearing stories like this, little scenarios at

the grocery store that are happening every minute

across the US. This is where I feel the internet is a

tool for mankind's evolution of the mind.

whew! i know heavy...

We're like-minded ladies, conversing over daily

activities, and influencing the choices that we make.

Ultimately, these choices influence the next

generation we're trying to lead. Thats all.

I'm really proud of you!

I always hate it when i read on the weightwatchers message boards

about people asking if anyone incorporates the body for life plan

with weightwatchers(which is totally doable. You just count points

for the food your eating is all)and the responses they get are

normally pretty negative like " yes, i tried it, no one can stick to

it for more than the twelve weeks so don't get your hopes up, it's

totally unrealistic " It's annoying because yes, it is a strict plan,

but A) you get a free day and B)it is food that everyone should be

eating on a daily basis anyway..more fruits, veggies, whole grains

and deffinatly more lean protein.

Normally it's the people living on weightwatchers frozen meals and

fatfree pringles that have negatives to say about it. Or people that

are doing just fine at " curves, thank you very much " *gag*..sorry, I

hate curves LOL

Yep, so many confuse BFL with fad diets. How wrong they are? The

challenges may be 12 weeks, BFL is just that FOR LIFE!

I think people sometimes resent change in others, because it reminds

them of areas in their lives in need of change. I lost a few friends

right along with my first 30 pounds of fat. Vickie

It is funny how when you have goala and are focused on something,

people get wierd with you. And it is so true how you can't share

what you are doing with people. They think you have a problem or are

obsessive about food. It's very frustrating.

I am glad that we have this to share and help each other stay

focused.

Who can appreciate me trying to get a good protien source at every

meal. :-)

I agree.

I am going to start telling them I am on a diabetes type2 prevention

program...41 million Americans ages 40-74 are at risk, and they better

get educated!!!!

Check out these links and see how many similarities there are with BFL.

It bites that you have to say there is something wrong with you to

justify eating well. There's something wrong with THEM. :-)

  • 2 weeks later...

Thanks to everyone who responded to this thread. Great to know I'm

not alone. My motto this year is: STAY AWAY FROM DREAM STEALERS!!

Intentional or not, I'm eliminating or limiting contact with

individuals who make it difficult for me to stay on track.

This is my year. :) Tikie

Yep. Sad but true. Sometimes you find out who your true friends are when you

need their support the most. It has been my experience that alot of times when

women are sabotaging rather than supportive, they are just plain jealous of our

decision to improve our lives, epecially in the weigh loss/toning up department.

We are a minority, unfortunately. Limiting contact with " dream stealers " is a

good choice, helping to propel you in the direction you want to go. Surrounding

ourselves with like minded people helps us become like them too. It's like

ridding the kitchen of the junk, some people are plain junk in our lives. We

just don't need 'em around so much!

Hey Amy -

Yes it is very sad. What's surprising is that it's usually women

who " appear " to be better off in many ways. I've come to the

conclusion, that it's the POTENTIAL they see in many of us, which

threatens them.

It's especially sad, when some of these dream stealers are female

relatives. Oh well, you live, learn, and grow stronger. :)

I can't speak for others, but I've struggled with low self-esteem

for years, I won't go into the reasons why. However, I'm learning

that often people were able to see many qualities I possessed, that

I'm just now beginning to acknowledge. It's never to late.

Hi,

I just have to add something. My sister-in-law has been at the

children's hospital with her boy since the beginning of the month so

she hasn't seen me since the beginning of the month. Well, I have

been doing good with BFL this month and she noticed I lost some

weight. So the first thing she did this morning was call me to tell

me that she has birthday cake left over from her son's birthday

party and that I should come over to eat it!!!! This is her

sabatoging me nicely...when I really lose some major pounds and gain

some muscle, she will try her hardest to sabatoge my healthy eating

and she will be down right rude.

I will just share her comments here.

,

Good for you for catching this! " Sabotaging me nicely " cracked me

up. It reminds me that others may be either totally unaware or

perhaps subconsciously threatened by our healthy ways and ultimately

I am the one to be responsible for what goes in my mouth.

" Sabotaging me nicely " is exactly how manipulative cowards work.

They will smile pretending to support you, while hoping you fail.

Very well put.

Wow, you ladies have got that right. Thanks again . It's

really cruel when you think about it. To befriend someone, knowing

all the time you don't have their back, takes a certain mentality. -
