Guest guest
Hi, I work with Butje at the Aromahead Institute, School of Essential Oil Studies. (I'm a blogger, copywriter and designer.) I've been studying to become an aromatherapist and I'm a complete beginner when it comes to natural perfumery. A few years back, I was really into perfumes. (Particularly Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab.) However, since I began studying essential oils I've learned that fragrance oils aren't really optimal for skin sensitivity/headaches/allergies/etc. I'm really interested to learn more about how perfumes can be formulated using natural--and particularly organic--ingredients. I'm a busy mom (two kids under four) but I will try to follow along as best I can. Thanks! - http://www.aromahead.com
Guest guest
> > Greetings Fellow Members,My name is Vera. I am an artist (primarily painting) and graphic designer. I am also a vegetarian, gardener, recycler, sometime knitter, sewer, beader and perpetual voracious reader. I bike, kayak and dance. I love the rain and my favorite sound is birdsong. My favorite book is Suskind's 'Perfume'; my favorite film of the same name. Cats have always owned me; currently two have adopted me.I have numerous interests but have always been " scent obsessed " not only with the conventionally pleasing and pretty but also with the unusual or " strangely " beautiful.Books were my friends when I was a child (still are) and the first thing I did when receiving a new (or used) book was open it to the middle and sniff. Ahhhhh. Yes, I still do this, albeit surreptitiously. I search for perfumes and books about perfume, and recently discovered Mandy Aftel's 'Essence and Alchemy'. An inspiration. Online research led me to the Natural > Perfumery Guild and the Yahoo group. You would classify me as a " newbie " .I want an ongoing, extensive learning experience about the art, craft and history of creating perfumes using only natural ingredients, as I try to adhere, as much as possible, to a natural and organic lifestyle.Above all, at heart, my passion is perfume. Vera, I love, love, love the move Perfume. I'm surprised how many people involved in the fragrance industry have not seen it! It is a bit macabre, I must admit, but I still love it. I too am scent obsessed but that's probably because it's my most heightened " sense " so I can't help it. I worked in the fragrance industry for over 20 years and now my obsession is creating my own blends. I can't get enough! My office looks like an essential oil warehouse now! I started out with skin and body care in 2000 and now my focus is on perfume. I am in the process of collecting every book I can find on the subject. I too am fairly new to NP and the craft of making perfume. NP offers a wealth of ideas and is very professional and friendly. Welcome! Guest guest
> It is a bit macabre, I must admit, but I still love it. People always say this but it's particularly true here: the book is _much_ better than the movie. Virtuosic and not macabre at all. Guest guest
> > So I got another book from the library, and this one changed everything. It was Mandy Aftel's Essence & Alchemy, and it showed me that the vision I had had was valid, and real, and obtainable. They haven't come yet, but I've ordered my first EO samples, and am looking forward to learning how to create natural perfumes! Jane, Greetings and welcome aboard. You are in the exact same place as I am with regard to perfumery. I have been ordering samples and spending time with each scent, letting each one go through its top, middle and base note phases and writing my impressions, thoughts, doing research on each one (you're a librarian, that will be an incredible advantage!). Maybe we can compare notes as beginners!!

Guest guest
Welcome MJ, I have been making soaps and stuff for 8 years and then decided to expand my experience with naturals and this group is just the best to do that and learn. Adam and Alec are always willing to answer questions. Annya, Sonsa and Sonja are quick to share and then there is Evie who always has a great story about different scents and there are just so many great people on this list and I can't mention them all which is sad. Guest guest
Hello Everybody This is the first time to the list. I have been into natural perfumery for over 25 years. There always is something to learn and share. I am looking forward to exchanging information with you all. So grateful to see some many interested in preserving and providing natural perfumes and essences. My passion for procuring and preserving quality aromatic materials, specializing in genuine rare and exotics oils, has been a joy and learning experience. This forum is great. I am truly excited about this venue of sharing about a subject we all love. Guest guest
> i am curious: when you say aveda's 'earth blend' i assume you mean their personal blends. do you know the number? i can help you recreate that if you're interested. einsof, Thanks for the warm welcome! Yes, it was one of the personal blends. I **think** it was either Earth 2 (or maybe 4). It had a distinct candy-sweet note. I'd be very interested in re-creating it; I can't find it anymore! Cheers! Guest guest
________________________________ To: NaturalPerfumery Sent: Mon, April 12, 2010 7:02:11 AM Subject: Introduction Dear people, Very glad to be here! After this experience, I studied individual essential oils for years in the context of aromatherapy. When I began to make soy candles with essential oils, I knew nothing about blending and my results were disappointing. Also disappointing were the soy candles made with essential oils that I encountered in stores at the time. Reluctantly concluding that only " stronger " synthetic fragrances could hold up in candles, I switched to the loveliest synthetic fragrances I could find and began selling my soy candles. Now as I expand my product line into bath and body products, I find I cannot bring myself to use synthetic fragrances in, for example, bath salts. Users may enjoy the scent, but they would be missing all the therapeutic benefits of bathing in natural plant essences. Same with shampoos, shower gels, and soaps. I am also exercising extreme care in my selection of other ingredients, so it makes sense to choose the least harmful fragrance ingredients. It is this urge that has me interested in learning how to create complex, multilayered, natural and cruelty-free fragrances using traditional perfumery methods. I plan to replace the fragrance line with naturals in the soy candles as well. Most sincerely, ******************************************************************************* Hi , Welcome to the group! I used to make candles and it is very difficult using naturals for fragrance because many essential oils don't stand up to the heat of a candle flame. Although I guess some folks are managing it. You're at a good start with Mandy's Essence and Alchemy. It will give you a very comprehensive account of NP, including history, extraction techniques, blending methods, and resources. You might also want to consider getting her workbook to get a real understanding of basics in blending. Also, our own list Mom, Anya, has a distance learning course that has gotten great reviews. You might also want to invest in Tisserand's book " Essential Oil Safety " , especially if you are putting them in leave-on body care products. Cheers!
