Did the program indicate that the plant grows exclusively within the

borders of tribal lands?

I have contacted the producer of the program and she forwarded my request to

Nott who organized the project.

BTW, The Omumbiri plant (Commiphora wildii) is not what is generally known as

African Myrrh which is Commiphora Africana.

Hi Dara

The plant is endemic to Namibia and grows only in northern Namib where the Himba

lives.

The organizer of Omumbiri the project replied to me and I will be able to get

hold of the resin. They normally sell the resin in 500 kg or more quantities but

is willing to let me obtain smaller quantities. I have to let her know how much

I want. Will anyone be interested in the raw resin?

Hi Everyone

Thank you all for the interest in the Omumbiri resin. Since this is a very

special project the raw resin will come with attached conditions to ensure that

the Himba people receive the maximum benefit from the project.(I had to sign a

hefty document to obtain the initial sample amount.) This will prevent

unscrupulous people from reselling the resin for exorbitant prices or try to

claim intellectual property rights to it, which has happened to African

botanicals too often in the past.

Anyone who wants to obtain some of the raw resin has to sign a release form

stating that they will not resell the raw resin. The organizer of the NGO

project will be away out of contact for 3 weeks, when she returns I will be able

to obtain more of the Omumbiri resin, and get the regulations for distributing

the resin among Natural Perfumers as well as negotiate the final price. Research

material on the properties of the resin will also be made available.

If this is handled correctly and responsibly then we will also be able to obtain

other rare aromatics which are produced in too small quantities for the large

companies but will but will work very well for us natural perfumers.

Hello,

Being new to the group, I will begin by asking a question! What is the

difference in " raw " resin? And yes I would be interested if I knew how

to process raw resin.

Thanks

Thank you Sophia for doing all this research and I will be happy to sign a

release. Really looking forward to working with this resin. Thank you again for

this effort and time you are putting into this!

> Last night I watched a program on one of local stations about the Himba, a

Namibiana tribe and the Omumbiri perfume plant. The Himba people used the resin

mix with fat to make perfumes. The presenters describes the scent as " a unique,

very crisp, a very clean smell, rather florally. "

Fascinating article/transcript. It's interesting that the Himba use other

Commiphora species for dental care (myrrh is wonderful for the gums and I blend

a tooth powder with it). Please keep us posted on what you find. It doesn't

sound like Stephane Piquart will be able to have an exclusive right to the

resin, especially since the organization researching the Himba is sensitive to

the ecological value of the plant, the sociological integrity of the tribe and

their economic well-being. It looks like they are not allowing the plant or the

tribe to be exploited.

I'm also interested in exploring the resin and will be willing to sign a

document. Thanks!!

Raw resin is an aromatic substance that is obtained directly from the plant and

has not been processed or refined. This would only be from plants that exude

resinous substances, ie. frankincense, myrrh, mastic, cistus. They are

generally " tapped " directly from the tree or shrub. These resins can be

distilled to extract an essential oil, or an essence can be extracted using a

solvent such as hexane (yeilding an " Absolute " ) or CO2 gas under low pressure.

Some resins are used in incense as they can be burned. I suppose they can also

be tinctured using 190 proof alcohol.

Welcome to the group!
