Guest guest
Sherry, I joined a fitness center/gym once I got physical therapy over after back surgery. I saw such improvement in PT and wanted to continue, plus I wanted to continue building muscle and toning. Our Fitness center is next door to the PT, and with the help of both, I have thoroughly enjoyed exercising 3-4 times a week. Mostly aquatics, but also Pilates, once and a while I'll drop in on the Yoga class, used the stability balls for ab strengthening, plus other stuff. I got a great deal on the price - before the new center was completed, they offered memberships for $50 a month. That was in 2002, and that is what I am still paying 4 years later - I locked in that rate! Take a look at RRPT and Performance Fitness - good photos of the center, pools, etc. http://www.rrpt.net/ I have participated in class settings, but prefer to workout now mostly on my own, although now am working a bit with a personal trainer. It is so wonderful because having been a physical therapy patient, everyone knows about me, CMT, my back, etc., no demands are made, but " goals " are set - which is my kind of language and I stay motivated. I feel so terrific after working out. I started slow, and carefully. I developed muscles in places I didn't know developed muscles! (Back, shoulders, neck, an infinitium) Also, remember something, if a muscle has atrophied, no amount of 'building' it, will restore it. But, sometimes surrounding muscles can compensate. I don't have any atrophy, other than my toes, I suppose. No big deal there. Go for it! Most fitness centers/gyms here offer an " introductory day pass " - for cheap - you get a tour, explanation, class schedules, instruction on equipment, and some time discussing your needs with a personal trainer. ~ Gretchen
Guest guest
Hi Gretchen, Thank you very much. I'm going to look into some places this weekend and hopefully I can find the right place for me. I'm willing to try anything that might help. Alot of what I have been reading seems to come from the USA and Oversea's. Do you know of places in Canada that are doing studies on CMT? Or if there are any support groups here? Thank you very much again this has been so helpful.I always thought I know alot about CMT but after joining this group I realized how much I really did NOT know.
