Guest guest
Hey Sandi, Great news--when will you be there? I don't know what time you will need to arrive, but will be able to tell you that. If you need her email addy, let me know and I'll send it. When we have to arrive at 6:30 am, we are told no solid food after midnight, nothing at all after 4:00 am. That is what is printed on the Pre-Op Info Sheet. Ask the anesthesia prescreening nurse for specific instructions. They will call you closer to your appt, or you can go ahead and call them--hospital main number is ; just ask for anesthesia prescreening. Our second cast, Todd was back there around two hours I THINK, then add the time it takes for him to wake enough to drink and get discharged. (First cast, he also had MRI, so can't give time estimate for that casting.) , Mommy to Todd Birmingham moms We have a cast date - and time. We have a noon time, which is hard. Can anyone tell me what the standard is for arrival to the hospital with a noon cast time? What about the anesthesia instructions - how close to that time can he nurse or have clear liquids? How long does the casting process usually last - I mean, I know what it entails in Chicago and we usually go back around 8:30 and are on the road by 12 - 1. But, if it's if we allow 3 hours, we're looking at being home by 11pm that night. Any input appreciated. Guest guest
Sandi, I cannot give you the specifics on B'ham, but Dr. K usually took about 40 minutes to cast Ian. Of course that doesn't include all the stuff before and after the casting, but his total time in the OR was about 40 minutes. Guest guest
Thanks, . I estimated 3 hours after the cast time - by the time you deal with recovery and petaling and trimming or whatever, it's usually around that long in Chicago. So, hopefully if we can get on the road by 3, we'll be home by 11. Ick. That'll be a long day of driving. But, our options are pretty limited at this point. Thanks! Guest guest
sandi, just curious whether or not dr. khoury will allow you to leave the same day as the casting since this will be your first trip there . . . i'm sure i might have missed an e-mail or two from the group, and you might have already covered this. good luck! deshea ---- Original message ---- >Date: Fri, 1 Feb 2008 10:29:10 -0600 > >Subject: Re: Birmingham moms >To: infantile_scoliosis > > Thanks, . > I estimated 3 hours after the cast time - by the > time you deal with recovery > and petaling and trimming or whatever, it's usually > around that long in > Chicago. Guest guest
I can't see why not - it's same day surgery and you get discharged after recovery clears you, from what I understand > sandi, > > just curious whether or not dr. khoury will allow you to leave the same > day as the casting since this will be your first trip there . . . i'm sure i > might have missed an e-mail or two from the group, and you might have > already covered this. > > good luck! > deshea > >
Guest guest
We've done similar drives from Erie back to VA the same day of casting. Not fun at all. But, it will all be worth it when he looks nice and straight . Noelle (12-2-01) Ian (8-15-04) Re: Birmingham moms Thanks, . Guest guest
Yeah, luckily Jack is pretty groggy after anesthesia so he sleeps most of the time. It's like everything else - NPO orders, early sunrise appointments, entertaining a crabby baby in the hospital - you just kind of get through it and get to the next one and hope that someday it will all be a distant memory and SO worthwhile! :)S > We've done similar drives from Erie back to VA the same day of casting. > Not fun at all. Guest guest
i know there was some discussion when a lot of people first went to erie, and if it was your first time there, then they preferred you stay overnight and made sure that the cast fit well and was not rubbing the next day. we only did this the first time and later always left the same day. in all likelihood, it is also different with shriners versus a private hospital. i'm sure you guys don't want to pay to stay any longer than you need to! although i was just asking because i didn't want to you to get there and have any surprises. i think you have had enough excitement already! deshea ---- Original message ---- >Date: Fri, 1 Feb 2008 11:10:05 -0600 > >Subject: Re: Birmingham moms >To: infantile_scoliosis > > I can't see why not - it's same day surgery and you > get discharged after > recovery clears you, from what I understand > On Feb 1, 2008 11:02 AM, Deshea L. > wrote: > > > sandi, > > > > just curious whether or not dr. khoury will allow > you to leave the same > > day as the casting since this will be your first > trip there . . . i'm sure i > > might have missed an e-mail or two from the group, > and you might have > > already covered this. > > > > good luck! > > deshea > > > > > > [Non-text portions of this message have been > removed] > >
