Barb,

It is always hard when an employer lays one off without retraining for

another position. While employers are not *required* to offer

retraning, better ones may offer it, especially if the employee is a

good worker and has demonstrated productivity and longevity. Wonder if

your nephew asked to be retrained? Did the employer refuse?

At this point, it may be best for your nephew to look into different

work, first possibly updating his education. Take a look in our Files

for the Career List - we put this together a long time ago, but it may

give him an idea for a goal to pursue.

You might also contact your State Dept. of Vocational Rehab to see if

there are any programs he might qualify for in being retrained for a

different type of job.
