Guest guest
Well now that my intro is out of the way..I love this website, and have learned so much. Hopefully some of you will learn from my story. My Mom says when I was very small I had flat feet that turned in The doc had me wear arch support shoes and walk on my toes, which I did. I developed beautiful arches but unfortunately it gave me a very high instep, jammed my ankle bones together, and shortened my achilles tendon. I always ran funny, and was awkward. I figured this was normal and attributed my foot problems to my doctor. When I dropped out of college( what was I thinking, I almost landed in Vietnam),I became fascinated with Yoga. I studied for years, lived in some ashrams in Calif.,even became a certified instuctor, BUT more important, I started doing Yoga 1-3 hours a day. Soon I was very stretched out, could touch my toes and beyond, and lost much of my un-cordination. With a veg diet too I felt great. When I started studying Kung Fu a few years later, my ankles hampered my progress, but I hung in there. At age 30 when I got married and had kids I worked alot more, and didn't excercise as much. I couple of decades later, I dropped a cigarette one day and realized my hands were losing sensitivity. I asked my doc about it and he said quit smoking. About ten years later my ankles started to feel like they had broken glass in them. With the urging of my wife, dear girl, I finally went ot the doc. I guess I always felt like if I got to be old my ankles would become a problem. We ruled out arthritis and diabetes, and after looking at my ankles he sent me to an orthopedic doc. As soon as he saw my feet he said CMT. I told him he hadn't listened to my story about my ankles so he sent me to a neuro. He looked and said CMT. I didn't believe it but the velocity tests confirmed it, and when bloodwork said type 1A I became a believer. I am the oldest of 7, and no one else has any symptoms. So now I try mto fit more excercise in my life, walking and Yoga, which is very old but unique. Even when poses are held, it is great for circulation, stimulating the endocrine system and much more! I manage pain with IBU, which I don't take all the time, and practice disassociating myself from the pain " it's all in the mind you know " It works well at the dentist, but is harder with chronic pain. Isn't it funny how its going DOWN stairs that is so hard, I can still run up them. My wife is very supportive and wonderful, just impatient with me when I don't do enough to help myself. I'm trying the vit C therapy, having originaly read that too much aggravated CMT! So far so good. Enough for today, Thanks to all for input and GOD BLESS. G. Olwell III fom Mass.
