Guest guest
I thought the show was excellent. This week was the second week on this subject. Last week there was a young woman who had worked with Dr. Phil at some previous time on the subject of weight. They brought her out and said she had lost 150 lbs as a result of gastric bypass surgery...no one acted as though she had " cheated " ...it was more like she had " gotten real " with her weight problem. I have been concerned that I may regain some portion of what I have lost now, so I have been thinking about this a lot. This subject was perfect for me where I am right now. > Well, I watched the show and I unfortunately identified with a lot of > what he said – even now. Do I keep junk food in the house " just in case > I need a snack " – yes. There were several other things that I said yes > to. I found several things that he said to be helpful to me – > reinforcing things I already knew. (To be honest at the beginning of > the show a couple of years ago I would have said yes to MOST of the > questions he asked – hence my weight problem.) I love the one saying he > had " Behavior Your Way to Success " . I think that is very true for me. > I don't agree with everything he said of course….. > > in GA > > >
Guest guest
I only caught the tail end of him last night on Oprah, but I didn't hear anything that offended me. Basically, what I heard him say is that there's something troubling in a person's life that causes them to over eat to the point of being over weight. I think that is true with a lot of over weight people. I think it is partially true in my life. in OK 303/153 MGB 3/29/2001 In a message dated 06/18/2002 8:46:24 PM Pacific Daylight Time, dlivonluv@... writes: << I like Dr. Phil, Id like to hear what he has to say. Guest guest
In my case I do think I sort of programmed myself to be fat ---- I believe I set up eating patterns for myself that got me to the size that I was. Compound that with years of dieting that caused my metabolism to be totally screwed up and I had set myself up to be overweight the rest of my life. Did I set out to be fat early in life -- not knowingly...... but do I try to make my kids see things that they eat right now at their age and make better choices - ABSOLUTELY! Guest guest
I totally agree with you, . But..... Compound all of that with genetic pre-disposition, hormone deficiencies such as the " ghrelin " they just found out about or whatever. It seems like they are constantly finding out about new differences obese people have to contend with that we have NO control over but society still says: diet and exercise. Even though they have proven that diet and exercise are successful 3- 5 % of the time. They would not keep recommending a cancer treatment that was only effective 3-5% of the time. I am so sick and tired of thin people acting so smug about their body size - as if they have done something " right " . To me it is the same as being born with brown eyes or blue eyes. Not much you can control about that. You are either born with " thin " genes and hormones or you're not. After that we can really screw it up more with our own issues and by dieting. But it all starts there. Margaret in St. Louis > In my case I do think I sort of programmed myself to be fat ---- I > believe I set up eating patterns for myself that got me to the size that > I was. Guest guest
I saw the Dr. Phil show too. Did you see the people in the restaurant that came by and told the two ladies to leave some food for the other people?? HOW RUDE!!!!! Even when I was heavy I never had that happen to me and when I heard it on the show this morning, my heart went out to them. The skinny lady on there who was downing all the obese people...well...I don't usually wish anything bad on anyone...but I wish for just ONE day she was heavy... Marie P. Guest guest
Kathy, Does he have his own show now or was this on Oprah? I agree it is horrible the injustices that obese people have to deal with. I think you are eloquent enough to say what you just said. I'll support it too!! Love, Betty DR. Guest guest
I can still remember very well the stares, the looks, the " oink, oinks " that I heard and all the comments like, " You have such a pretty face, if you could just lose some of that weight!! " I'd think, right! Like I don't want to lose it!! Many other times People would say, " Well just push yourself away from the table!! " Then there was one of the many times my FIL made comments, but the one that got me the most was, " I'm going to outlive you! " He is nearly 30 years older than me. Of course, at the rate I was going he was probably right! Most people mean well, but there are some who are so uneducated and heartless to make comments like those you have mentioned. I would never wish obesity on anyone, but I do believe that we will all be held responsible for what we say and how we treat people. May we never forget where we have come from, and try to help as many others as we can to be blessed in the same way we have been. In Him, Betty Pappas MGB: 3/13/00 Re: DR. Guest guest
If it were that easy there wouldn't be so many obese people in the world. Too bad that that have always been thin can't understand. I shouldn't say all thin people don't understand cause I know some do. But a lot don't. I haven't saw the show, but I recorded it. I have a feeling this one lady is going to get me riled up and I'm going to want to come through the TV at her! Guest guest
I am sitting here, watching Dr. Phil this afternoon. If any of you are on the west coast and can still catch it, you might want to. He is “helping” women with their body image. He is so kind that he just gave three women breast augmentations to help them with their body image problems. Aren’t we supposed to learn to love ourselves the way we are?? Guest guest
I watch Dr. Phil from time to time and have seen shows like today, that disgust me. I watched a few days ago and he was reuniting families in Louisiana. He flew one woman to Texas to be reunited with her children and husband. She had no idea if any of them was dead or alive. It was a very touching show. He is helping the families in the show but their lives back together and committed himself to helping those affected by Katrina. He’s not all good but he’s not all bad either. Trying to appeal to the masses, he has to earn his ratings in order stay on the tube. I’d love for a talk show host to get up and stand for everything I believe in but I doubt it would be a very well rated show. That show would be more suited to a Christian station, not network TV. Kenda I agree, Lea. Stuff like this is inexcusable. But then, I'm not a Phil fan and never was. ;-) > > Re: Dr. PhilHoney, I stopped watching him, but lately I have been > watching him again. Guest guest
I tried to help you by going to our member list and making changes to your email delivery, but I absolutely cannot find you listed anywhere! I am stumped. The only thing I can suggest for you is to go to your group list and make the editing changes yourself. (Go to " My Groups " in the upper right corner of the webpage and edit it from there. You can choose web only as an option, which keeps your membership, but stops delivery of the emails.) Wish I could help you more...I tried! Patty > Hi, > I want to see if I can get off this list until after I have the surgery and > will have news then. Guest guest
Jo Lynn...personally I don't care for Dr. Phil. I had a friend who went once to be in the audience. What she relayed to me was this...each and everyone who sits in the audience MUST sign a form stating they have NEVER had mental problems and have NEVER had a need for a therapist. If you HAVE had experience with a therapist for any reason whatsoever, you are denied entry.....it is amazing to me that everyone in the audience has NEVER see a therapist? Maybe I am just the oddball, but many many people I know have been in that chair! After I heard the paperwork that had to be signed, I realized that perhaps he has some tactics that are less that honorable. I would be happy to write and add to the campaign...just let me know where I write! Debby [ ] Dr. Phil I do not care if I get credit, I just want Dr. Phil to explain his numbers. I think his comments has probably hurt Donor Awareness. If you go by his figures than I would think maybe ppl would think twice about signing a Donor Card and more important letting their family know their wishes. Also if you are dead you cannot sit up and say NO NO to your family so it is best to have your wishes done by an attorney so your final wishes are what you want. I belong to other Liver Groups and many many many many people have written to Dr. Phil both snail mail and email. All have promised me they would let me know either thru the groups or off group if they hear from the Dr. Phil show. At this time no one has heard back from the Dr. Phil show. Guess we are going to have to work harder. So Thanks to all that are helping out with this. Guest guest
I wrote a while back asking where they got their figures and told them that giving misleading and false information could be harmful for those waiting for transplants. I asked for their source of information. I never received an answer. That's weird that your friends had to sign such a waiver. I thought that people on his show were there for therapy so why can't people in need of therapy be in the audience? I do like Dr. Phil. He's entertaining but I think it's tacky the way he gets his son and wife to participate on his show. They aren't very interesting and I doubt that anyone really wants to see them. It doesn't reflect well on Phil's judgement. Someone mentioned that he's not really a doctor. Maybe if we would all write we might make an impact. Obviously, I didn't. Good luck, Dr. (just kidding) Jo Lynn...personally I don't care for Dr. Phil. I had a friend who went once to be in the audience. Guest guest
I have to say that I like Dr. Phil and I like his wife and son's input. I think it's neat that they are always there to support him. I thought the opposite of the info he gave about donars. I felt that more people would donate if they realized that most people die before getting a liver. I can't imagine having to sign a waiver like that either. They can edit things out. Oh well. I am staying a donar no matter what anyone says, even Dr. Phil! Zanna
