Guest guest
My husband, 11yo son (who has OCD) and I watched " Monk " and enjoyed it. Monk is a sympathetic character, likeable and a gifted detective, but clearly afflicted with OCD (which no one on the show, including his psychotherapist, seems to understand). At first this lack of understanding bothered me, but then I realized that everyone I know who has OCD in the family seems to have gone through a period on misunderstanding and misdiagnosis, so in a way it fit. Similarly, the explanation that OCD is caused by trauma (a misunderstanding, but haven't we all heard that?) and Monk's nurse's enabling behavior. I figure they just don't know any better. Wouldn't it be great if future shows had a message from the OCF? Or, better yet, if Monk found a good CBP/ERP therapist and a well- informed psychiatrist and got help?! My son really enjoyed the show. Even without the OCD angle it was exciting and entertaining, and I think he liked seeing a person with OCD portrayed as talented and good at heart. The show did cause my son to have a tiny OCD attack: in the middle on the show I asked my son if he and I could switch places (so that I could fold some laundry on the ottoman of his chair). He got up, then asked me exactly where I had been sitting on the couch. . . I just knew he was trying to be eccentric, and that he had been inspired by the show, so I refused to tell him. I made sure to tell him that if Monk got help and did his therapy, he would still be a brilliant detective. Moreso, in fact.
