Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

Some of you might remember a while back an inquiry I had about gas as

one of my colleagues was experiencing this along with exteme

bloating, bouts of diarhea and constipation etc. If you want go over

the previous inquiry and responses write " Gas? " in the search. She

has now seen a few physicians with the last leaning towards her

having IBS which seems odd even though she is experiencing many of

the symptoms. She only started to experience these sypmtoms with the

change in her diet for her fitness competition and my question to the

members of Supertraining is: Is it possible for IBS to be brought on

by a change in the diet?

***No - I personally have seen no evidence of this. However certain

foods can indeed aggravate IBS symptoms. I had a look at the changes

in her diet; only eggs really have been known to aggravate it.

Most people can trace their Irritable Bowel Syndrome back to: (Nicol,

1995, IBS A Natural Approach)

-An attack of viral or bacterial gastroenteritis, which may make the

intestines overreactive and sensitive

-A long or strong course of antibiotics, which may alter the delicate

balance of natural beneficial bacteria in the body

-An abdominal or pelvic operation

-A stressful time such as divorce, threat of job layoff,

unemployment, exams, and so on

**Is this the first competition she has entered?

**Has she had similar symptoms before? A lot of people go

undiagnosed for any very long time - IBS is considerably variable

Out of interest what drugs has the doctor prescribed? What else did

the doctor say about IBS?

I don't know the answer to your question, but I do know that IBS is a

kind of wastebasket diagnosis, which tends to be given when all other

diagnoses have more or less been excluded by the gastroenterologist. I

suspect that when she changed her diet for fitness competition, she

added in a whole lot of new things all sort of at once. She could try

eliminating these new things (supplements, foods, etc) one at a time,

for a period of a week, then adding each back in again and seeing

whether that produced a change in the IBS symptoms.

****This is her first competition and is stressful for her. Mostly

because of her her current diet prescription and her ability to

follow it to a " T " . She feels bad if she does not follow everything

exactly the way her trainer has it laid out for her (she is afraid to

tell her trainer that she might take the advice of another

professional to prescribe a diet where she feels healthier). She

also recently had Lasik eye surgery (end of June). And the

possibility of a layoff is there. However, like I said, prior to the

diet changes these ailments have never been so prominent, in fact

most if not all are new experiences for her.

I agree with what was written below. I have found the major

exacerbating trigger to be emotional stress, combined with sleep

pattern changes.

Maybe the stress of the pending competition is playing on this

woman's mind more than she is aware.

Some IBS sufferers have varying results with yogurt.

Bruce,

Are you saying that yogurt may or may not assist with IBS symptoms?

Or are you saying that yogurt can aggravate the problem more.

I meant yogurt can be beneficial.

Yogurt has an ability to restore 'good' gut flora to normal levels.

As the good flora numbers go up, any baddies go down due to

competition for nutrients.

However, I am not an expert on IBS by any means. But in my

conversations with many medical friends, three who have IBS, they

recommend eating yogurt daily when symptoms are bad.

Personally, I think there are several causes for IBS, one being the

psychoneuro axis and the other being gut flora disturbance, each

exacerbating the other. I think results with yogurt would depend on

the relative contribution of each.

Those passionate about this recommend using a pure lactobacillus

acidophilus base yogurt with no added sugars etc. It isn't hard to

make your own either if you want to save some money. There are many

sites on the net to show you how.

Good luck with that. Reread a previous post about your friend being

afraid to talk to her coach about changing the diet... Hmmm not a

healthy situation.....

Here is a well written article on IBS.

http://www.niddk.nih.gov/health/digest/pubs/irrbowel/irrbowel.htm

Re your colleague's change in diet, I should have mentioned that

legumes are notorious for causing flatulence and bowel motility

changes, especially if not cooked long enough. There is more info on

diet at the link.

Good luck to your friend. Have had IBS myself during exams and stress

times and it is a bummer..... :)
