Hi All

I am the father of four children. I am on this list specifically

about my 10year old son who has ocd along with expressive language

difficulties.

He presently is on 75mg of zoloft and 5mg of zyprexa.

I am specifically more concerned about his depression and anxiety

than anything else.

Meds have not seemed to make much of a difference at this point. He

is also in therapy as well.

There has been a suggestion of Bipolar by the psychiatrist and i

don't know but i don't see it. I want to make sure we know what we

are dealing with here. If anything he is inattentive possible ADD and

does have auditory processing difficulties. So who knows what is what

at this point.

He does get very frustrated and angry sometimes but is not defiant by

any stretch. I have also joined a bipolar parent list and have read

countless articles and books on the subject and he just doesn't quite

fit. There are certain areas but that goes across the board with any

child who is having difficulties. I guess i'm trying to figure out

what is what when it comes to him.

I also have a daughter with NLD (nonverbal learning disability). I've

been active on an NLD list for about 3years now as well.

In anycase i can't give my whole story in one post but wanted to

introduce myself more than anything else. I'm sure i'll have many

questions along the way. My oldest daughter has signs of anxiety and

subtle ocd. My wife has elements of ocd. My mother in law has

elements of ocd. I guess i have elements as well. So guess where my

kids get this stuff from.

Regards, Dave

Hi Dave, and welcome, I have 2 kids out of 5 with symptoms, but am

just starting to explore symptoms in my younger (5 yr old boy), and

wondering if I do in fact have 3 affected.

I wanted to mention that I just started researching NVLD with

regards to my 10 yr old. I initially thought she had OCD

perfectionsim, later her routines and interests/deficits seemed

aspergers like (w/ social anxiety) but with getting older, and more

demanding curriculum, I've started to think maybe NVLD fits best. It

has elements of OCd (like seeming obsessiveness with perfection and

routine) she also has advanced reading but poor math and other

difficulties with mechanical operations, things as simple as

buckles. her social skills have improved alot, but still need work.

Her strong interest in socializing and sharing seemed to preclude

aspergers. She is great at swimming but refuses team sports. It is

all difficult to categorize. Anyways, I could go on, just was

surprised to see another looking into this seemingly less documented

disorder (NVLD). We also have a spectrum of symptoms in my family,

extended family as well.

Hi Dave and welcome! Great to have another dad in the group!! I'm a

single mom with 3 sons - the oldest 17 and twins 13. One of my

twins, , was diagnosed with OCD at the beginning of 6th grade

(he'll be going into 8th).

I know you said you are mostly concerned with the depression &

anxiety right now but want to ask how his OCD is doing on the 75 mg

of Zoloft? What type OCD behaviors does your son have?

doesn't have any " thoughts " that he has said (he won't say much!) but

seems to have mostly rituals/compulsions that he does to, in his

words, " keep something bad from happening to him " and also he has to

do it until it " feels right. " A lot of his actions don't seem to fit

the typical OCD behaviors but others do.

I've tried to watch for depression in him but haven't been able to

detect any so far. Is there any particular way your son acts/behaves

to show he's depressed or is he sorta verbal about it?

There's also " something else " with that I can't put my finger

on. I've thought about NVLD for him as it also fits him somewhat.

That or Aspergers maybe.

You mentioned frustration and anger but no defiance. Is that more

during the school year, I'm thinking of schoolwork here, or does it

happen with just maybe daily living, etc.?? Does he have sudden mood

swings or something to make others wonder about bipolar? Regarding

schoolwork, it's been much more difficult for since his OCD

got more severe in 6th; before 6th grade, it was just a little minor

erasing/rewriting, etc.

Well, I'm full of questions for you! Sorry! But welcome to this

list, it's been a great support for me since 's onset. Keep

us posted on how things go and anything you find out!

If anything he is inattentive possible ADD and

at this point.

He does get very frustrated and angry sometimes but is not defiant by

any stretch.

OF course you are looking at all the possibilities to come up with

the right diagnosis. There are so many labels that OCD seems to share

symptoms with, so it can be confusing. I'd say that if you sense that

bi-polar soesn't fit , you are probably right.

When I harken back to my son's struggles at age 11...he had auditory

processing difficulties because his brain was so " on fire " with OCD

thoughts. He was frustrated and angry because he felt stupid for

having to obey the OCD directions (which on one level he knew were

ridiculous). Quite a few of us have seen the holes in the wall and

the broken pieces of whatever. The anxiety, while sometimes

unbearable, always comes down again. Your son needs to rememer that.

You will find the right combination of meds to achieve a therapuetic

level of relief. The therapy will add to and reinforce the settling.

Unfortunately, this can take quite a while. Maturity and experience

will really help. And with your love and involvement, I'd say that

your son is on his way to making OCD small. Best wishes.

  • 2 months later...

I'm sorry should have been more specific on my first post. Call it mommy

brain, and a late night post, LOL. Andy is Anaphylactic to Soy, Peanuts,

and All other legumes. He is allergic to milk, wheat, and is outgrowing eggs

I am working with the school district on an emergency plan for him, or

should I say I will be once the school nurse can call me back. I did talk

to the teacher, the nurse, and the principal about him last year. My other

kids attend the same school, and I'm active on the PTA, so they know him. He

has never attended school, but he has gone with me once a week to help out

in the other kids classes. He is very very shy, and refuses to talk to

anyone new for quite a while. Andy played soccer this spring, and while he

go to games and practices for the entire season, I don't think he spoke more

than 2 words to his coach or teammates. I did see a major accomplishment,

the last game, he played ring around the rosie with them, and actually held

hands. I'm just worried about how he is going to " cope " with going to

school by himself.

Andy has been diagnosed with OCD, by his pediatrician this week, but we are

waiting to go to the behavioral health, on Monday. I have long suspected

this though for a long time. Most of s problems revolve around food.

If we buy a treat, and it is not put on the top shelf of my bedroom closest,

than for example he has taken entire bunches of bananas, or a full bag of

marshmallows, package of cookies, into his room, and they are gone 5 minutes

later. He also has a major problem with anyone touching his food, or his

food touching on his plate. A couple weeks ago a little neighbor boy took a

drink from Andy's water bottle. Needless to say, could no longer

drink from that bottle. He " freaks out " if his brother or sister drinks

from his, but this was a major meltdown. Since as he puts it " He has

different germs, cause he was born from a different mommy! "

My mother doesn't think that Andy has any problems beyond, " needing to grow

up a little " . That for me is harder to deal with. More than once I have

seen her rolling her eyes, when he is having a problem with something. Okay

sorry this is so long!

Which foods is he allergic to? Schools in some areas understand peanut

allergies and won't allow other children to bring peanut butter sandwiches,

etc. Very important that the teachers be aware. And I suppose you have an

adrenalin pen for the school nurse? I've never had to deal with that, thank

goodness.

Was he in preschool or day care previously?

Hello! I have just found this group and it looks very helpful. I

have a 4 1/2 year old son that has recently been diagnosed with ocd.

He is also anaphylactic and food allergic. I'm in the process now of

getting him ready to start pre-k in about 2 weeks. This is going to

be a very " interesting " event. Does anyone have any advice on how to

prepare him, or the school for this?

Hi ,

I actually am a teacher of a preschool. I would advise you

to ask for a meeting with anyone involved with your child at the

school. And bring some information about OCD and what trigggers him

and tell them how he interacts with other kids. And anything else you

can think of about him and his behavior. Remember most

teachers/schools aren't very informed about this . And make sure you

keep in touch with the school. Good Luck... Marilyn
