Guest guest
Hi everyone, My name is Dawn, and I've subscribed to this list to learn about the experiences others are having with raw dairy products, ideas, recipes. I have been purchasing raw milk for about a month now. This is a recent transition for me, one made in an attempt to improve the health and well being of my children (twin 10 year old boys, one dx'd with ADHD, and the other a special ed student who struggles a bit), myself (45, with some health issues and stress issues) and my mother, with whom we live who is also struggling with some health issues. We live in NJ. I have in the past purchased raw milk cheese from a local dairy/cheese artisan. To my knowledge it is illegal to purchase raw dairy otherwise. I was looking into the whole cowshare concept but have been unable to find any such co-ops anywhere near me if they exist in NJ at all. However, I live just a few miles from the NY state border. In NY you can purchase raw milk from licensed dairy farmers directly. I have found a wonderful dairy with herd of Jersey cows from whom I buy milk and yogurt. It's a bit of a ride for milk, about 40 minutes each way, but I have enjoyed the ride and the farm. The kids love going. The farmers are welcoming and friendly and let the kids help at milking time, brushing and feeding and cleaning up after the cows. I find I really like knowing the names of the cows whose milk I'm using. So far besides drinking the milk and eating the yogurt, we have made made butter and buttermilk. I have also just begun making kefir. Now I have never had or made kefir, but after reading about it extensively it sounded like a wonderful thing to add to all our diets. We have fruit smoothies made with kefir for the first time this morning and everyone loved them. That's it really. I want to learn whatever I can. Am willing to try new things, and would love to figure out how to help make it possible to change the laws in NJ. After all it doesn't seem right that it should take 2 hours when you have to run out to get milk :-). Dawn Dbquinto@...
