Guest guest
I'm interested in hearing from anyone who has tried Inositol with or without success. I am currently in the process of weaning my son off his SSRI as I just don't really feel that it has been as effective as the therapy in the accomplishments he has made in conquering some of his OCD symptoms. In fact, I'm quite concerned about mood and behaviors that I did not see before the medication. I have done some research on Inositol and find it very interesting that all the foods that contain Inositol naturally, my son is severely allergic to. This gives me reason to believe that there may be a deficiency of Inositol with him and I'd like to try the suppliments to see if there is any positive result. I found that Inositol is found primarily in legumes, citrus fruits, cantaloupe, nuts and wheat. He has severe anaphylactic reactions with hives, throat swelling and asthma to all of these except wheat if it is processed. He cannot tolerate any whole wheat or wheat bran .... I think I may have really stumbled on something here as far as my son is concerned. There could be a link with his food allergies and his OCD afterall. Thanks for any information. Guest guest
Hi Glenda, Here's one of the main links I always refer to for dosages and info: http://www.homestead.com/westsuffolkpsych/Inositol.html Now, where I get 's inositol from, at iherb, their dosage is 1/4 tsp = 845 mg, not what is in Dr. Penzel's note (link above) so when/if you do try some, check the info on the bottle. Most of what I've read recommends the powder, I don't know why, you'd think the tablets just as good. However, since still can't swallow pills, it's a moot point for us. currently takes, by my calculations, 10.14 grams almost every day. I say " almost " as on weekends we sometimes get slack and he might just get it 2x a day, instead of the usual 3x. When we began on it, as had always been the one of the twins to react (break out) from " unknown " things, I started him out really below the recommended dosage to see if anything " bad " would happen. Kept that up for about 3 days, then a little more for 3 days, then more.....really worked us up slowly. Then when I got him up to where I wanted to see if it would help, we just kept taking it and in my mind I was " waiting " for 4-6 weeks to see if I noticed a difference at the current dose. And I/we did. So we've basically kept it at this, though I have to admit on those " waxing " weeks, I do increase by an extra dose. You CAN supplement the SSRI with the inositol, note that's mentioned in Dr. Penzel's article.
