Guest guest
Colleen the test to determine Hep C in the blood was 1985 in Canada and the US had the test before that. That is why the Red Cross got sued in Canada for giving us Contaminated blood and I had my first biopsy in 1990.Canada let the blood tests slide until 89 when they were forced to use the new tests. The hepatitis C virus was not isolated until 1989. Blood was tested for it beginning in 1992. No one had a biopsy for HCV before that time. Wow I would have pushed for a liver bx much earlier and definitely right before I started tx as a baseline and for stage and grade. A bx is routine usual medical pt guidelines every few years and for starting tx. The medical profession knows or should know now that judging by labs even liver enzyme labs and with scans is in not enough to judge stage and grade. 20% or more with Chronic HCV in advanced and later stages and of liver disease can have normal or near normal labs. A liver bx is still the gold standard the best we got now for staging and combined with all other labs testing and medical history. We don't judge here we all are equal don't care why how or when a member or person contracts Hep C. You mentioned a alcohol problem. What came 1st alcoholic liver disease with damage or Hep C and if so with a weakened immune system and liver damage to set up shop. A liver bx is usually done baseline prior to tx's to ensure a pt is stable enough liver is stable enough and to judge if tx throws a pt in a advanced stage/grade worsening of it all or from compensated cirrhosis to decompensated cirrhosis stages. Much advances medical discoveries and breakthroughs have taken place recently and over the last few years with HCV liver disease and tx's and an ongoing medical research project in the making worldwide.
