Guest guest
Dear ers, Today I received a horror story from a person with CMT who has been scammed by a " CMT group " . Do not let this happen. Each CMT organization, in order to raise funds, must have papers filed with their State Attorney General Office and Secretary of State. REAL organizations will always honestly provide their financial statements and other materials for you to read before you donate, if you wish. You may also ask for a list of past and current projects, a list of Board memembers, and how many 'staff' have CMT. If you have questions about a particular organization, ASK. Any group or organization that does not or will not answer your questions please stay away from. There is scamming and fraud going on, so be wise. In addition, once you make a donation to a non-profit, you should receive a receipt. If you don't, make sure you ASK for one. Double check to make sure your donation is tax deductible as allowed by law. CMT non-profit organizations have strict accounting procedures to follow. You may also specify WHERE you'd like your donation to be used - - for research, to support a conference, for new pain medicines, for doctor's forums, for administrative expenditures, for children's educational materials - etc. You get the idea. You may simply wish to donate to the " general fund " , which means your donation will be used where it is needed the most. If you do not wish your donation is used for political lobbying, make certain the group or organization knows this. If you have ANY problems with a donation you made, and you wish to contact someone about the 'questionable' organization, contact your State Attorney General's office asap. As for non-CMT non-profit organizations, it is the same. Don't let your hard earned dollars get spent for the benefit of some scammer's personal expenses. These people will eventually be living in jail. Here is a reputable link to check out many charities: http://www.charitywatch.org/ As for me personally, I donate to http://hnf-cure.org, as well as to http://www.neuropathy.org I don't mean to scare you, but simply feel the need to voice my concern over " scams " for someone's personal gain and not a donation to further the good works of legitimate non-profit organizations to help people with CMT. Make sure you know exactly where your $ is going and what it will do once it gets there! And, as always, all our information, posts, archives, files, etc. at are completely free of charge. I do the moderation as a volunteer. I am not paid for this, nor have I ever been, nor will I ever be. That would negate our entire mission. ~ Gretchen/ Founder/Moderator
