Guest guest
Thought I’d share my letter to PA officials. I hope others will take the time to respond also. Sincerely, I want to express my dismay and deep concern over the harassment that your state’s raw milk dairy farmers are undergoing at the hands of Bill Chirdon and the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture. I have often purchased raw butter and other dairy products from some of the farms in your state when I visit, and I seek them out primarily for their sustainable agricultural methods, and the fact that they are minimizing grain in feeding their cows, as well as maximizing pasture and forage feeding. History and recent research shows that milk products from cows fed primarily forage is dramatically safer and contains less pathogens then milk products from confinement grain based operations. The sad fact is that the Federal government and most states have largely ignored the potential benefits from this type of agriculture and seem focused on the almost un-American task of shutting these small sustainable family farms down. I have personally seen a radical turnaround in my health since beginning to consume raw milk and other raw milk products (primarily butter and yogurt) in the last 7 years. The contention that raw milk and pasteurized milk are identical in their health benefits to humans is simply wrong. I have seen the evidence in my own life and it is dramatic! There is no surprise that the FDA is against raw milk. The FDA, unfortunately, has largely become an organization controlled by the large corporate food, pharmaceutical, chemical, and biotechnology companies. Americans are realizing that if they want to achieve good health, they have to look elsewhere for guidance. I would really like your state, as well as other states, to take a role in trying to find out why these farms and raw milk are so popular. Also, in trying to develop testing standards that recognize that raw milk is a different product than pasteurized milk. Why not help these small farms and their consumers by developing policies that will protect consumers when there is a real issue, but help these small diversified farms learn what it takes to get their operations even more safe? I and others don’t want to have to feel that we are completely ignored by a government that is supposed to be of and for the people. I also think the PDA should drop charges against Mark Nolt and Glenn Wise and return all supplies and equipment illegally seized from them. Also, what is Bill Chirdon, a former executive with Dean Foods, doing in charge of a department overseeing raw milk? Sincerely, …. And contact info!
