Guest guest
File - Mold Hi EveryOne, Occasionally people discover that there is mold growing on their Kombucha. The mold can be any color: red, blue, green, white, black, etc. and it look just like the mold that grows on bread or cheese or fruit. It is fuzzy. It is usually seen growing on top of the Kombucha Colony but it may also be growing inside of the colony, just as it grows inside of cheese and fruit. There are pictures in the list PHOTOS section which show what the mold on KT may look like. http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/original_kombucha click on the PHOTOS link in the left margin. If you see mold on your Kombucha Colony (SCOBY) the best thing to do is to throw the Kombucha colonies and Kombucha tea from that batch away and clean everything very well, rinse completely with lots of hot water and start with a new Kombucha colony and starter tea. Not all molds are toxic but some are and it is better to be safe than sorry! Using at least a cup of " starter tea " from a finished batch of Kombucha helps to acidify the new batch especially if you mix it with the cooled water, sugar, tea mixture and then pour some of the acidic KT right on top of the Kombucha Colony as well. They became inactive so I had the bright idea of leaving the scoby in one batch at room temperature for a long time to get it active. It floated to the top and came out a couple times and I just poked the air out and let it back under. In the end mould grew on it. > > So... would it be better to just brew a few batches and see how that turns out? I'm hoping they'll become active again. >
