I have a CAE negative herd. I dam raise my kids. And the kids are still easy to handle - but that it because of bloodlines AND because I try to handle all my kids at birth. And I try to get a little colostrum in a bottle and give that to the kids at birth... so that they see me as 'Mom', too.

I am on DHIR test, too. Once a month I separate the kids for 24+ hours and do milk test. I also still milk twice a day - giving me some milk for either the house or for the calf (now 13 months old), and it gives the does grain. The does come in and the kids want to know "what is in there" that the does fight to come in for!!

Once or twice a day I will go out to the does' pen and sit down on a stump or a feeder and get mauled by the does and the kids. I do strongly object to kids jumping on my face and back, but otherwise the kids treat me just as they would their dams. And just like their dams, I will punish them if they get too obnoxious. Occasionally I will have a doe kid who doesn't like to be handled, but that just makes me handle them more - until they not only tolerate being touched, but become to like it (I know a lot of good scratching places).
