Guest guest
I don't know if your scoby is healthy or not. I can offer this link for you to see if it compares with how you stored yours tho. I'd say that if you had them submerged in brewed KT or water with sugar, my guess is that they are fine. Scobys stink naturally and you were just keeping all that stinkiness contained in a jar and not letting any of it air out. That's why it stinks so much. But check this out and see if this is what you did for sure. http://www.kombuchakamp.com/2010/08/scoby-hotel-video-quick-tip.html?awt_l=AH9It\ & awt_m=KndEB9_2eo5jLN ________________________________ To: original_kombucha Sent: Wed, April 6, 2011 9:23:48 AM Subject: skoby storage I put 3 scobys in a bowl with a lid and stored in a cupboaard like someone said to do. Like a hotel. It has been in there probably 2 months. I went to give one away and they look ok but have a strong odor. Is this ok from being closed up that long or do you think it is bad. It's not moldy and looks fine just a stong odor.

Hi, The strong smell comes from the strong acidity of the culture, after leaving it for several months. This is fine, as long as there is no development of mold. Strong acidity actually does prevent mold! I should think, it is great to have a very acidic culture. So use it to make a new batch. This means, your scoby/culture of bacteria and yeasts, will be fed again with sugar and tea nutrients. Your cultures should be absolutely fine - extra-fine because so acidic! Guest guest
Hi oosnails, You have done just fine IMHO, storing those extra SCOBYs (that's my video Lyn posted - thanks Lyn! Many people store their SCOBYs in the fridge but this robs the SCOBYs and starter liquid of their power. (there is no need to refrigerate a SCOBY, it cannot " go bad " ). By allowing them to stay at room temp in dry conditions, you have created more powerful scobys and starter liquid. I agree with Margaret, that strong odor means it's ready to work for you! -- Hannah Crum The Kombucha Mamma Kombucha Kamp <http://www.facebook.com/#%21/group.php?gid=12029952564>

Guest guest
Hi Hannah, I did not know that you are not supposed to keep the scoby in the fridge. I had mine in the fridge for the past 6 months. Is it still OK? Thank you Alina > > Hi oosnails, > > You have done just fine IMHO, storing those extra SCOBYs (that's my > video Lyn posted - thanks Lyn!
