I believe that of Hudson Valley cheese is milking sheep this time of year.  I don't think she is on this email list, but you could try her.

-Bill

I am searching for a small farm that is milking sheep that would be interested in working with me to evaluate a milking machine. I have successfully established the pulsation parameters for milking goats with my milking system that was originally designed for milking cows and would like to now do the same for sheep. If anyone on this group has a herd of sheep and is interested please contact me. The duration of time would be at least a couple of weeks, a few months is preferred. I am most interested in sheep that are currently being milked with a conventioal milking machine to be able to compare the difference in teat condition, animal behavior and milking time. I am located in upstate New York in the Binghamton area.

Well… I’m not close to you, but I will be milking about 80 this coming season.I use -11.5 pressure, 50/50 ratio, and about 155 pulsation rate… although I’ve toyed with uping that to closer to 180.I used to use 60/40 pulsators and rate was slightly lower, but have learned that anything less than 150 for sheep is not good. You can contact me if you think I can help. Yes… Bill and … they are milking their own out of season (in the fall) since they purchase most of their milk from others who normally do not milk in the fall.http://www.blacksheepcheese.com/ Thanks,Sheri Palko, owner/managerLocust Grove Farm, Farmstead Sheep's Milk Cheeseswww.locustgrovefarm.net From: RawDairy [mailto:RawDairy ] On Behalf Of BillSent: Friday, November 26, 2010 5:26 PMTo: RawDairy Subject: Re: I am looking for someone milking sheep I believe that of Hudson Valley cheese is milking sheep this time of year. google dairy sheep, find out what is available in your area. Some milk East Freisen, some Lacune and some mixes of everyhting.

Rhonda Who is going to try milking Finns because I have them.

Finns are a great place to start, they are pretty milky and have nice udders.Several sheep dairys have Finn bred in. Most dairy sheep in the US are a combination of East Friesian and something else. There are no totally Lacaune ewes in the US… a few Lacaune rams that were brought into the US several years ago provide the only limited Lacaune genetics we have. For the most part, East Friesians are the same way, but there are more lines of EF, so many of us have been able to keep the % of EF very high in our flocks. If someone in the US advertises a 100% EF or 100% Lacaune ewe for sale, I would seriously question their heritage. What state you in ? I can try to put you in touch with some local sheep dairys in your area. Also, there is a raw sheep cheese operation (cheese half only, not the sheep) for sale in TN.The owner plans to continue to milk sheep and sell the milk to the new owner. Again… a lot of the answer to this question lies in your location…You want health, soundness, parasite resistance… in addition to lactation. We started milking a couple of Finns last fall and are planning to milk a few this spring and start building a herd of milking finns.

we have 6 ewes right now and are planning to build a herd from there. We really like the short tails and friendly nature of the breed. the rams are much nicer then most rams I have dealt with. they are very gentle and easy to handle. the ewes are friendly as well and more goat like then other sheep breeds we have been around ( that's a good thing in our book) we are also milking goats and will be making hard aged raw milk goat and hopefully sheep, and goat/sheep cheeses.

our rams mother had and udder bigger then some of our good milk goats..........it was huge!!!

We'll see how it goes.

I milked sheep for a few years. I milked Polled Dorsets, which were a multi-purpose (meat, milk and wool) sheep in England many years ago. One of the ewes produced a lot of milk, but the other ewe didn't. I've talked to a few other farmers who have milked Polled Dorsets, and it seems that the milking ability has been bred out of them.

I've heard that East Frisians, Rideaus (developed in Canada), and British Milk Sheep are all good milking sheep, but I have had no experience with them. I think that the British Milk Sheep are the nicest looking of the three breeds.

I really like sheep's milk for making cheese and yogurt. It is so nice and creamy, and makes an excellent product.

Best wishes in your search for a milking sheep!
