Sherry,

First, let me say I'm so sorry you are going through this. I have been in

that kind of pain before and I know what it is like to have children that rely

on us even when we have a bad day. I used to be a social worker with hospice

and one of the most important things that we taught our patients was the way

your body responds to pain. It is like a big cycle. You have pain that starts.

Then your body naturally responds to the pain by tensing up. Then you can sleep

because you are in pain. Add the tense muscles to the depression and lack of

sleep and the pain gets more and more severe. You are on a slippery slope now

and the way we naturally respond to pain makes it get worse and worse until

there is an intervention. (ie: we fix the problem or adequately treat the pain)

In severe cases like what you are going through (and what I have been through),

doctors can introduce a time release pain medication that can control your pain

for up to twelve hours. Two pills a

day, means less meds on your tummy....tummy probs also plaque me when I am on a

lot of pain meds. Simply put, Oxycontin or MScontin are the good 12 hour meds.

One is oxycodone and the other is morophine sulfate... " contin " meaning

continuous release over 12 hours. If, for some reason your pain begins to rear

its ugly head before it is time for the next dose, you have a medication for

" breakthrough pain " ...in my personal case it has usually been vicodin, but

sometimes I have needed stronger. Most times, I don't need it at all because

the two simple pills a day leave me without pain and without that medicated,

foggy dopey feeling. Oxycontin has gotten a bad wrap in the media because of

people abusing it, but please understand they are altering the pills and getting

12hours worth of pain meds at once. They are not taking it as prescribed. I

have had to do this pain management regimine probably 6 times in 9 years,

usually after surgery, and not once was I tempted to

abuse it. I was just so relieved to be out of pain that it was a God send.

Didn't mean for this to be so long, but I just wanted you to have a clear

picture of pain and your body's response to it. Wishing you some much needed

relief soon.
