research explaining autism behaviors

Hey all, I just got my maternal nursing book for OB next quarter. As usual, I

flipped back to the index to read what ever is in the text about autism. I was

amazed at the horrific section dedicated to it. The book continually called

autism " bizarre behavior of unknown causes " and it didn't get much better from

there.

I'm drafting a letter to the author to express my issues with her section and to

request she update it in future editions. One of the things I want to point out

is that if she described, say hypoglycemia in a patient as " bizarre behavior of

unknown causes " then nurses wouldn't learn anything about why they behave the

way they do. I need to have some sort of data to back up my claim. Like I know

some with autism report rocking and moving their bodies because they cannot feel

their bodies, that they feel they are floating away because of nervous system

malfunctioning. Does anyone know of research that explains some of these claims?

I've already requested from my professor an opportunity to address these issues

in class so that my classmates won't go into the work force with this sort of

ineptness when they come across autism families.
