Guest guest
Debi, I had various behavior problems when in school. Some days I was sick and just wanted people to leave me alone. Sometimes the work was to hard, I have trouble asking for help so I would throw my book across the room to symbol I didn't understand. Other times it was way to loud and I would start crying and telling everyone to " SHUT UP..... " Then sometimes I just wanted to misbehave! Bulling is a very though subject. See I was not diganosed offically til I was 16 even though every teacher I ever had said I wason the spectrim no one wanted to " stunt my learning by give me a diagnoes " But I would get in fights or scream in the hallway say a cuss word something like that when I was being bullied. What help was; 1) I was allowed to leave classes early to make it to my next class with no one else in the hall. 2) When I would not understand something about my school work I was given 2 differnt colors of paper that I could hold up to symblose I needed help. (this was the biggest help EVER! and now I am getting better at asking) 3) If things were getting to loud I was able to leave class and go someplace that was quite (Example: A closed stairwell, the library, the nurses office, and empty room, something like this) 4) I was able to listen to my IPOD or wear headphones in class after instruction was over with. That would keep things quite. The biggest thing to relieze. Is if you are in the US the federal law states that they are to provide FREE AND APPORIATE Education. Apporiate Education is different for every student! If public school can not provide apporiate education metheods and settings then they HAVE to PAY for a private school that can! ________________________________ To: Autism_in_Girls_and_Women Sent: Friday, April 24, 2009 8:45:24 AM Subject: those on spectrum, school question When those of you on spectrum were in school, do ever recall times that you had behavior problems because of school work being difficult, because you didn't feel good, or similar issues? Or, did you have behavior problems always because of the way you were being treated by teachers, other kids, etc? As I try to sort through this bullying issue with Allie it is making me wonder if virtually every behavior problem she's ever had has been because of others making her feel bad or if I'm just paranoid right now. Suddenly screaming in the hallway is making sense since that's where she was being harassed. Only I heard " Allie screamed in the hallway " with her not able to tell me why. Guest guest
Debi I wa so fmuch bad and reacted from both reasons. some and more often it was of just as much teachers as kids but much other things were of sensory, fine motor issues and low tone maked me tired out easily. even to this day I to sit sort of humped over. the teachers often told of me hjow bad and the kids told of me this and the family and even the doctors shared of this to me in reports so yes much beahvior existed but it was of rare for me to hit others or scream out at a person, I to usually turned the rage to self. not because of TOM but it just never occured to me to go after another and hit them. but if one reached into my space to remove of me from a place would react in aggressive of pinching or kicking them. again that was of rare for me to react that way to another. sondra

Guest guest
Thanks to everyones' responses. I was told Friday afternoon the school is launching an investigation, what ever the heck that means. Today Allie was watching a movie on ABC family where there were some bullies. I told Allie, " Don't you EVER let any bully scare you. I'm proud of you for screaming when they were messing with you. Any time you EVER feel like you're being bullied you scream as loudly as you can. " She was grinning from ear to ear. I figure if that's all she can do to respond to someone bullying her from lack of verbal skills, more power to her. I want her to have confidence in telling someone they don't have a right to mistreat her. On another note, she has had an INCREDIBLE day. Patti her feeding therapist told me to start putting a little bit of what ever the family is eating on her plate. She's also taught me about the crumb theory that the smaller a new food is, the less offensive it is. So I cut up a tiny bit of hot dog in tiny pieces & put on her plate. I told her she didn't have to eat it but Ms. Patti says she has to have the food we eat on her plate. We all went on with lunch cutting up & all. All the sudden Allie says, " MOMMY, I KISSED IT! " IT was the first time since feeding therapy started that she decided on her own to try a food. This last year my girl seems to be progressing at an amazing rate. It's a true blessing watching her grow. Debi
