Guest guest
Yes, you should definitely get an appt with a pediatric ortho who specializes in INFANTILE scoliosis. The first step is to determine if it is idiopathic (no known cause) or if it is congenital (there is a known cause such as a hemivertebrae or something like that). If it is idiopathic, ask them to measure the RVAD. If it is under 20 degrees than it will likely resolve. If it is over 20, then there is a good chance it will progress. Gabby is 18 months old and suffers from hypotonia, myelin delay, GERD, eosinophilic esophagitis (EE), she wears DAFO's (little leg braces), receives OT and PT and lives solely on an elemental diet (special amino acid formula). The PMR doctor at our neurologists office recommended that we have hip and spine x-rays done, just as a " baseline. " We expected them to be normal; however, her spinal x-ray came back showing a 10 degree scoliosis with the apex to the left at T9 and T10. From what I have read, this is very mild, but was wondering what we should or shouldn't be doing? So I am seeking some quidance. Our neurologist said to do nothing and x-ray again in one year. Any thoughts? Guest guest
Thanks . I called Children's Hospital of Michigan (in Detroit) and spoke to their orthopedic department. They have one physician (Dr. Reynolds) who specializes in infantile scoliosis. He only sees scoliosis patients on Fridays, so the first available appointment is December 7th. Actually, that should be fine because it will be 4 months from now and he will then be able to compare the August 13th x-ray to see if there has been any progression. I really appreciate your guidance, as a year seemed like a long time to me too. Guest guest
Good! Glad you got an appointment. Make sure the x-rays are taken in exactly the same position otherwise you won't get an accurate measurement. For example, you can't compare a standing x-ray to one that is lying down. Good luck! Be sure to post after the appointment!
