My youngest daughter Kyna enlisted in the Navy this week. She is in the

delayed entry program until January 22 when she will leave for boot camp.

She wanted to finish this last semester of college before she goes. Kyna

qualified for the CTI program (Cryptographic Technological Interpretive)

which means she will be learning foreign languages. She scored very high on

the tests and they want her to learn 4 languages, Chinese, Korean, Japanese

and Farsi or Arabic. She also has a meeting tomorrow on going straight in

to Officer Candidate School because she will be a college graduate with 2

degrees. In the delayed program she will be starting her physical training

next week. They'll be training her in all the things she will have to learn

and pass in boot camp. I think they want her to get through that as fast and

easy as possible to start her other training. They tried to get her to leave

next week but she has too many things to tie up before she goes. A General

from the Pentagon even called her. She passed her preliminary background

check but has to have an extensive one through the FBI. She will be

decoding top secret documents and messages. Kyna is very good with

languages. She already knows Spanish and French. It seems to come natural

to her.

Anyway, I am both proud and scared to death for her. I know she will be in

California for months in school and will probably be stationed in Hawaii

after that. But with the war going on you never know what will happen. And

I really worry about problems with North Korea and China. I know most of

the Navy isn't actively involved in the fighting right now but she will be

in Navel Intelligence so I don't know where she will be sent eventually.

She has thought about joining the military since high school so this isn't

something she takes lightly. She wants to serve. She will be the first

female in our family in the military.
