Thanks for the info, Sandi. You said that you have to make appts.

months ahead of time for the OR. So, how does that work if he goes

up there and needed a cast right away?

Hi ,

I hope you don't mind I chime in about our experiences with

Shriner's Chicago. We applied to Shriner's Chicago before Dr. Sturm

was Miss Mehta trained (2006) and then almost 1 year later (2007)he

hosted the ETP with Miss Mehta.

Our experience back in 2006 (which could have changed by now). We

applied, received an acceptance letter, went to the appointment and

was given our only treatment option of casting for Max's particular

case. We were told that there is a very long operating room wait

list to get surgeries scheduled. However, being that Dr. Sturm

recognized how imperative Max needed to be casted we received a call

of Max's first cast within 1 month of our first clinic appointment.

As Sandi explained, Dr. Sturm asks for 4 week follow-up appointments

after each cast is applied (sometimes we had to go 5 or 6 as I

prefer friday follow-up appointments-less time off from work). This

comes to visits to Chicago 1 month for cast, 4 weeks later follow-

up, next month cast, etc.....But this can vary depending on how each

child responds to the treatment.

Shriner's Chicago has always given us last minute casting dates

(within a couple of weeks) and haven't schedule any of Max's O.R.

appointments much in advance. I know this can pose a problem for

many people's schedule (but things could change in their scheduling

process/procedures). My work is flexible (I am so grateful for FMLA)

and my husband is self-employed. I just want to be honest with our

experience with scheduling casting dates. But if you explain your

situation, they may be more accomodating.

All in all the real message to consider is what is best for your

child. I'm not going to Shriners Chicago to save money. I'd pay all

the money in the world to get Max the best healthcare...he deserves

it. I would sell my house, cars, everything we owned. We have seen

now 6 opinions including Dr. Sturm and Miss Mehta's. It wasn't up

until Shriners Chicago in 2006 I came to peace knowing I am doing

EVERYTHING I can do for my pride and joy. Yes, it hurts inside to

know Max will not get the results many other children will get or

have gotten, but this is a fact of Max's life and I will not give up

hope that casting will benefit him in the long run to some degree.

Yes, I tried to avoid traveling and medical costs initially, and

even had Max in a brace closer to home, but ultimately I realized

this wasn't in my child's best interest-his curve doubled in 3

months!

I know I'm rambling, but I just want to share our experiences.

Best wishes to you.

Shriners in Erie was great in scheduling the casting dates ahead.

This was our only other Shriner's experience.

But I strongly urge you to voice your concern to Chicago, if you

decide to accept treatment there, that this is a big concern. They

are very understanding. Also to keep following up if you don't hear

back from them in a reasonable time. ASfter the August ETP in

Chicago, their processes may have changed and may be better at

shceduling the OR. We'll find out next friday. Please don't let the

scheduling discourage you from getting the quality care your baby

deserves.

It is great to have family in the chicago area. My sister and her

family are 45 minutes away from the hospital. It nice for them to

see Max grow monthly.

Keep us posted as things develop.

Best wishes,

Hi sandi,

Thank you for your kind words. It means so much. I am so eager to

hear about Jack's follow-up. I think you said it is 9/26. Will you

travel with the girls again or just do a round trip since the

apopintment is so short? It's a lot of driving and gas money, but

they're worth a miilion times more!

It is very important for siblings to be part of the treatment as

much as possible. It may be just as comforting to them as itis to

Jack to have familiar surroundings. I'm sure they are a great help

with the car ride.

That is great about the hotel you've earned it.
