Guest guest
Hi ,the explanation seems circular, PICA is just the term used for ingestion of non-edible substances. I would have his blood lead levels checked if these have not been done recently as plumbism is the most common biological factor that is associated with PICA in ASD. KenSubject: PICKING AND EATING NON-FOODS- OLDER CHILD.To: Autism-Biomedical-Europe Date: Thursday, 4 November, 2010, 9:16 Hi, Our nutritionist believes that the reason our 13, almost 14 year old son is picking at and eating just about anything [tassels off cushions, pens, paper, leaves, tea-lights] is pica, due to the huge growth and changes in him over summer. However, after about 5 weeks of a supplement packed full of extra vits and mins, in addition to his usual, its not really abating. At 13, he has NEVER been one to eat non-foods in the past. Also, just in terms of picking, he has completely unravelled a sock, one day at school, and one evening recently, a pair of pyjama trousers ended up as one flat piece of cloth! Anyone got any ideas or reassurance to offer? An extra question- HAVE JUST ORDERED CYTOFLORA AND WONDERING IF ANYONE HAS SEEN BENEFITS IN AN OLDER CHILD? I could do with some good stories!! in Edinburgh

Guest guest
Hi , Just a thought ... We think we had very low zinc as children and also especially in puberty (when the need for zinc is greater). I used to eat the pumice stone as a child. We seem to have a greater need than any multi-vit formula. We use metabolics zinc picolinate. Low zinc is associated with pica. " Pica can occur during pregnancy. In some cases, conditions due to a lack of certain nutrients, such as iron deficiency anemia and zinc deficiency, may trigger the unusual cravings. Guest guest
Hi, Ken, I think this was a case of my misunderstanding of the term..... > > Hi , > the explanation seems circular, PICA is just the term used for ingestion of non-edible substances. I thought the term PICA meant the craving and eating caused by a lack of certain minerals. I had asked our nutritionist if he thought this was an ocd behaviour and he said it was more likely PICA and suggested he take extra micronutrients to make up for the amoune most likely depleted due to massive growth spurts and hormonal changes. It worked when he did this as a little toddler and we gave him trace minerals, tho he still bit his fingernails. The only time he has ever had white tops on his nails was when he took Kirkmans DRN Formula, a supplement designed by Dr. Neubrander. However, it was one of the things we dropped when heh began to have hallucinations - B Vitamins have never really agreed with him. I will also post re glutamates and calcium, since this seems to be of interest just now. As for plumbism, we await a recent toxic metals test [urine challenge with DMSA]. BEFORE WE BEGAN CHELATION SOME YEARS AGO, HIS LEAD WAS WAY OFF THE PAGE, SOMETHING LIKE 13-14 TIMES THE SAFE LIMITS. OOPS. In Feb 2010, it was finally on the page, although still very elevated. I will be interested to see how much it has gone down this time, and will post results. Mandi - you are no doubt right about lead leaching as he grows - he is about 6 " taller than in June! I very much doubt the Sick Kids in Edinburgh would test his blood for lead. Even when we showed them his high levels on various tests- hair, stool, urine- all different labs - they refused to accept this was unusual, because 2 had been challenge tests. They even got 'expert' support for their view from a 'specialist' in Glasgow. Watch this space for results..... Juli in Edinburgh
