Hello Nuha,

My 6 yr. old daughter started reversing a lot of her letters and numbers too.

It started around when she just turned 5. She doesn't do it very often now, but

still does at times. I take her to a Chiropractic Neurologist who feels that

because her mind is either working quicker or slower than her hand, then she

does this. He didn't feel she was dyslexic, just that it is a processing

difficulty for her. It didn't happen when she first learned to write her

letters and numbers because she had to put more thought into doing them

correctly, so both her hand and mind worked in sync. Now that the writing comes

easier, she began making those mistakes. With much practice and patience

(sometimes MORE practice than patience), she is memorizing the correct way and

making the mistakes less often. Sometimes my daughter would do this over and

over again even with me sitting with her. In cases like that the Chiropractic

Neurologist said its best to have her leave the writing for at least 15 min.

then come back to it. In a sense it was like clearing out her brain from the

area in which it was stuck in. When she would return, she would usually write

the letters once again correctly. Although it seems like a set back, its not.

It is that your daughter is ready mentally to move forward quicker than her

brain is able to deliver the correct message to her hand (if that makes sense).

The ring around the anus sounds like yeast. My daughter had that too, a while

back. It went away when our DAN dr. put her on yeast fighting supplements and

rx. meds. It took a while since getting the yeast under control is on-going and

tedious. A diet low in yeast or yeast feeding foods will also aid in

irradicating it.

Hope this helps,

Hello everyone

My almost 5 year old is reversing all her letters and numbers. up to three

months ago she was writing all her letters and numbers correctly

her hand writing was firm, precise, her pencil grip was perfect, and her

reading was at at first to second grade (at four)

well, she is really having a hard time reading now (or maybe just lost

interest)

her grip is wrong and her work is sloppy. and she is reversing everything....

so her b for example is a d and vice versa so are all her numbers

she was drawing and painting also which she appears to have lost interest as

well

this a major set back and would like to hear some opinions on this

also, what is a ring around the anus means?

Thanks in advance

Thanks Karmen

while you response makes sense i still feel that my daughter's issues are a

little different. i truly feel like she is seeing things reversed i am worried

that this maybe a vision issue... i am thinking that she may actually see hings

reversed and therefor is writing reversed and she has slowed down her reading

have you considered a developmental ophthalmologist? the one in my area is $750

for the consult, a steep price for me right now... if so, was yours helpful

Yes, I took my daughter to a Developmental Optometrist and previously to an

Opthamalogist. In both instances I thought my daughter had a vision problem. I

even had her get an MRI to make sure there wasn't something more going on that

the drs. were overlooking or just couldn't see. My daughter was actually

turning her head to one side (like women do when they put on mascara) and

looking very closely at her paper, kind of with one eye. It was a weird thing.

She still does it periodically. Both drs. found nothing significant. My

daughters eyes team properly, follow instruments properly, etc. etc. She has a

slight astimatism, however the dr. said many children do and that glasses at

this time will be more of a nuisance for her than a help. The dr. is keeping a

watch on that. Prism glasses were not needed.

For quite a while I thought that something more was going on, even if the drs.

couldn't see it. Now, in your case, if you haven't taken your daughter to an

opthamologist, that would be the first step. If you can't afford the

Developmental Optometrist (the one I saw was about $150.00 for the initial

evaluation, which is MUCH less than the one in your area), then maybe start with

a regular Opthamalogist, not a developmental one. What state are you in? I'm

in NJ. If you have insurance, at least that visit should be covered because an

opthamologist is an Eye Physician, different from an optometrist. You may even

find a Pediatric Opthamologist, which is even better. This way he/she can rule

out any eye diseases. Then from there, look into finding a Developmental

Optometrist who is less expensive. You may have to drive a distance, but I'd

rather the drive then not being able to do it because of the $$. I know all too

well how hard it is to come up with hundreds and hundreds of dollars. I do all

my daughters therapies/drs./treatments without my husbands financial help

because he feels its all a waste of money and therefore won't help financially.

Have you considered a Chiropractic Neurologist? I take my daughter to one who

is absolutely wonderful and accepts my insurance. He's an hour and ten minutes

away from my house. We used to go 2 times a week, now we only go once because

my daughter has so many other therapies after school that we had to find room

for everything, so we cut down the visits to once a week. A Chiropractic

Neurologist works on the whole neuro. system including the sensory system, which

vision is a part of. We've been going since March and I've seen improvements in

her vision with that also. That is something to consider also. The website for

my dr. is: www.drmichaelmaster.com Maybe there is one in your area.

You mentioned your daughter reading slower...well, mine doesn't read at all yet,

and she turned 6 in May. That is great that your daughter can already read. It

can be such a tough skill to grasp with children that are on the spectrum. My

daughter's dx. is mild-moderate autism, but she also has an auditory processing

disorder, and an anxiety disorder. She has just recently become interested in

spelling words, so I think the reading part is coming. She will be doing AIT

therapy after she gets out of summer school next week, and the therapist is also

a reading specialist, so she said she would one day work with my daughter to see

where she's at with blending sounds and then give me some tips on helping her

with her reading skills. Your daughter is already past this stage, so its a

matter of finding out if there is a reason behind her reversing letters/numbers

and reading slower.

I hope I've given you some information that is helpful. Keep in touch.

Have any of you considered your children who look at things at the

side may have a central scotoma? I have read multiple accounts of

people with autism reporting not being able to see out directly in

front but could see better peripherally. I don't know if that can be

necessarily picked up by examination or not. Dr. Megson did some stuff

on this & found daily doses of cod liver oil seemed to improve

outcomes, and it has been documented that central scotomas could be

from nutritional deficits.

Nuha I to wonder if it is of not how she is of processing the way she

sees things such as for me if I to try to brush of my hair will

actually brush it forward instead of back as it should be, I to tend to

reverse operations . another things if one tells me or I to read turn

right and such and thinking which way is of right my brain will reverse

of it and cause of me to turn of left. when I to look at words I to

read of the last letter first of a word and then scan the whole words,

I to also tend to sort of scan often right to left and then read of

left to right. I to if not paying attention still will turn of the

magazine pages backwards and even in hand writing the b become a P and

the i can be of upside down with the dot below and the migh reverse the

order of letters such as said might be of spelled out as siad and then

even in my typing I to find if not careful will blend of two words and

or skip over part of a word altogher and or miss words and not complete

a full thinking even though I to felt I to did. these to me are of all

processing issues/ But also I to shared I to think here but maybe not .

But I to be of discovering that I to feel letters and relate to people

who have of names that begin with letters I to feel. I to be of more

and more aware that i to feel letters with sharp angles and straight

lines such as K,A,M,I,H but letters that have of hooks or curves such

as j, o, g, G, C and things of this are harder for me to feel and so

rare for me to really relate to others who have of names that begin

with such letters. I to also relate to some who have of letters that

had of long time related memory such as B and S which is of my name

Sondra and the brother of me is of Bobby. so those two letters tend to

be an exception to the rule so to speak. there are of some with the

letters of P and D which are of some want of booth a curve and straight

and so find self more connected to them by means of visually seeing of

the words of them than actually relating to them as individual peoples.

But can find them them as a medium sort of mixed response to them. can

connect but cant retain of them as strongly and without more effort to

gain a memory to relate to them in a strong fashion. But can relate

minimally with them in the real of life.

so for me to see of words in just a visual mode find self able to

respond and relate to the words back in a visual mode and in some ways

a related fashion because not seeing a person behind the words to

relate too in the real of life. Yet as i to share I to be of

discovering i to " feel " letters more than actually " see " of them. Yet

can see and make of sense of them but not really relate fully to people

if they do not have of a sharp angled or straight lines, as the first

letter of their name.
