Guest guest
where are you? does you son have language? have you tried PECS? My gut instinct is he is frustrated because he cannot communicate, but who am I to even suggest that since I do not know him. Typical discipline techniques do not work for my child either. Instead we work really hard on reinforcing positive behavior and rewarding him with points, his allowance, special trips to his favorite places (luckily it is the library and swimming). We've also used behavioral techniques - taking away his favorite things (which every parent does). But we had to take an extreme measure and take away all the books and videos with villians because he was acting like a villian. This included every favorite fairy tale and Disney book and video. He earned them back one day at a time that he exhibited good behaviors (which literally took months). We had to use this technique two years in a row and he has now learned his lesson. Feel free to contact me off the list regarding our experiences with medication. maggietmck@... wildeye77535 wrote: Please help me with any advice on how to stop my son's aggression. He is only 3 (4 next month), but he is very large for his age. He constantly pushes, hits, and kicks. Especially his sister and all children. Sometimes my husband and I. Timeouts do not work at all. Yelling and reprimanding do not work. I have always been dead set against medication, but I feel that I am desperate at this point. It is unsafe for my daughter and any other child that happens to come into his path. I am very stressed out and my muscles are sore from trying to restrain him. He also has severe ADHD and sometimes is like a wild animal. Who do I go to for medication? I need someone who is extremely experienced and knowledgeable. Guest guest
I am also a special ed teacher and work with children on the spectrum and behavior issues. I agree with regarding you consulting with a BCBA. I can put you in touch with a few if you'd like. You may also want to consider having him tested for allergies, especially foods. Nutrition can often play a large role for many children. With regard to medication this is of course a sensitive issue. I am not a doctor by any means, but I work with many many families who have decided that medication is an option, especially after all other resources have been exhausted; supplements are another option, but need to be monitored by a professional. Persoanlly speaking, medication and supplements have been very helpful for my own child and myself even as an adult. Professionally, I agree 100 percent that behavior is communication and that your son is trying to tell you something. Know that there a re a ton of resources, parents here being the best resource for helping not only your son, but helping you and your family as a whole. Guest guest
Hi, My son was very aggressive (and large) at that age too. Have you ever had him testes for zinc deficiency or zinc/copper imbalance?? An imbalance in zinc/copper or zinc deficiency can be a cause of aggression and the " wild animal " effect. I would also highly recommend removing any artificail food coloring and preservatives from his diet (www.feingold.org). They deplete zinc in the body. If you are in Houston, you can go see Dr. Arturo Volpe. He is a chiropractor/nutritionist, DAN!, and works with a lot of autistic and ADHD kids nutritionally. He really helped us get my son stabilized via nutrtional means. I am also very against medication and know how desperate you are becoming. His website is www.drvolpe.com and has a lot of informative articles. Dr. Volpe is wonderful. We switched to Dr. Jepson @ Thoughtful House in Austin a few years ago because my son has other medical problems and I wanted an MD involved. There are many other nutrients your son is probably not getting via diet as well. Most likely due to some errors in absorbtion or gastrointestinal inflammation. Is your son by chance constipated or have very large BM's?? Once I ran out of zinc and did not replace cause I thought it wasn't having much effect. Within about a week, he became very violent towards me, even attacking me in a grocery store with anything he could get his hands on, over the fact I wouldn't let him have something. I started the zinc a couple days later, no more violence. Yes, he would get mad and have a temper tantrum, but no more attacks. Feel free to email me off list if I can be of any more help. > > Please help me with any advice on how to stop my son's aggression. He > is only 3 (4 next month), but he is very large for his age. Guest guest
I am hopeful Nagla will chime in here but here is my 2 cents. I think aggression can be caused by undiagnosed pain or sensory overload. I would recommend the CARE clinic in Austin not only because I go there but they take my insurance United Healthcare but so does Dr. in Austin. I would do some blood tests right away and look for yeast, viruses, and bacteria in the gut. I would also look for stomach digestion problems or undigested food in the stool. I suggest you not medicate with RX drugs until you discern whether there is really an underlying pain issue involved. Aside from these things you might try behavior therapy. Sometimes aggression can be a means of escaping the expectation or a substitute for lack of language. Time outs never worked for my son he LIKES to be left alone. We took away things he liked when he pushed or kicked, such as computer or videos. Honestly it wasn't until chelation that my son's stims and pushing and kicking were reduced. After one year of IV chelation my son slept through the night, was totally potty trained, and aggression of any kind and stims of all sorts went down by 90%. Now you can say that vaccines don't cause autism and that chelation is unproven but this was my experience and we are totally off all RX meds and he's recovered so much he's no longer in a autism class. RPM at HALO helps us greatly with academic learning and communication which also contributes to the diminished aggression when children can show what they know and speak on a letterboard and be heard by the world. I think pain and lack of understanding and lack of being able to speak and show what you know could cause anyone to be aggressive even if they did not have physical pain. So before you over medicate I wanted you to consider these possibilities others may have different opinions of course. Guest guest
You put it very well Trina, meds will only mask the problem and not address the underlying causes like gut problems, food allergies and intolerances etc... With a child this young, it's important to think about what meds would do to developing brain and body, possible side effects, long term safety and efficacy. If you medicate now how long will these medication work for, what effect will they have on your child's brain and body long term, and no one knows any safety information or side effects on a child this young. Care Clinics are a good place to go to help you figure out how to heal your son's body, there are also things you can research and consider starting like a gluten free/casein free diet, feingold diet. Food and artificial additives and preservatives are a big culprit in behavior issues. If your child has gut pain, or he is not absorbing the right nutrients, or eating a food he is allergic to, this can really affect his behavior and his brain function. Here are some good websites to read: http://www.danasview.net/parent3.htm#diet http://www.gfcfdiet.com/ http://www.autism.com/treatable/form34qr.htm http://www.alternativementalhealth.com/articles/walsh.htm http://www.feingold.org/pg-faq.html http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/Feingold-Program4us/ http://www.danasview.net/yeast.htm http://www.foodb.com/ Nagla > > > > Please help me with any advice on how to stop my son's aggression. Guest guest
I have been a chiropractor for 16 years and never had an unlisted number that I can recall. Guest guest
Your child is very young and can do well. What is he eating? It is not necessary to use meds at this point unless you've tried other things. I know how frustrated you must be. It's exhausting, but there is much you can do. Diet is huge. It's a lot of work, but well worth it. ABA combined with diet would be very good for your family. If you let me know what he is eating I can get you started while you work to get a plan together. We see Dr Volpe. I can get you started, let me know how I can help. Where do you live? If communication is difficult and he's inflammed and toxic he'll be aggressive often. ruhesd@... > > > > > > Please help me with any advice on how to stop my son's > aggression. Guest guest
Hi Trina, & nbsp;thank you for the helpful info about the Care clinic. & nbsp; I have a newly diagnosed 4 y/o son with PDD. & nbsp; We are currently waiting to get my son into the Thoughtful House in Austin as he has " gut " issues and I hope to get the help he needs. & nbsp; My insurance, United Healthcare, won't cover the expenses there. & nbsp; I was wanting more info about the Care clinic you mentioned since you have coverage there. & nbsp; What dr. did you see there? & nbsp; I went to the website but they didn't have any biographies about the staff there or names of doctors/therapists. & nbsp; Is the Dr. you mentioned at the Care clinic? & nbsp; Was the wait long to get in there? & nbsp; I am debating on going with the Care clinic or the Thoughtful House. & nbsp; Any help is great. & nbsp; Thanks so much. & nbsp; & gt; & gt; Please help me with any advice on how to stop my son's aggression. He & gt; is only 3 (4 next month), but he is very large for his age. He & gt; constantly pushes, hits, and kicks. Especially his sister and all & gt; children. Sometimes my husband and I. & gt; & gt; Timeouts do not work at all. Yelling and reprimanding do not work. I & gt; have always been dead set against medication, but I feel that I am & gt; desperate at this point. It is unsafe for my daughter and any other & gt; child that happens to come into his path. I am very stressed out and & gt; my muscles are sore from trying to restrain him. & gt; & gt; He also has severe ADHD and sometimes is like a wild animal. & gt; & gt; Who do I go to for medication? I need someone who is extremely & gt; experienced and knowledgeable. Any recommendations would be much & gt; appreciated! & gt; & gt;

I have been a chiropractor for 16 years and never had an unlisted number that I can recall. Patients are pretty responsible people, believe it or not. Every time one has called me, it has been a very valid and important call. Telemarketers, on the other hand, I have no use for. Guest guest
Aggression can also be a behavioral issue. If you want to pursue looking at it from that angle, I provide in-home behavioral services. I write plans/recommendations, or even can just come do a one-time consult to let you know my thoughts by observing the behavior. If you are interested or want more information, email me at: magthomas@... - , Psy.D.
