Guest guest
I have had dairy goats for about 30 years. Bought my first 2 because we didn't think we needed as much as a cow would produce - though I admit that there is times that the herd is producing as much as a good Holstein. I have LaManchas, Oberhasli, and Recordced Grades. The grades are mostly LaMancha/Oberhasli crosses. The past 2 years I have used my Oberhasli buck as my "clean up" buck. At the same time I usually use a boer or boer-cross buckling with my "teenagers." I am on standard DHI test - have been since 1982. And I try to get my herd appraised just about every year throught ADGA. I worked for a DHI lab in Petaluma, Ca, for 16 years, and learned a lot about the paperwork that comes with DHI/Provo. And the whys and wherefores about testing. I show a little, less and less every year, primarily because I don't have a truck big enough to pull my livestock trailer to haul my 14+ milkers to a show... and finding someone to milk while I am gone can be a problem. After the kids are weaned I primarily use my excess milk to raise either pigs or calves. I hope to get into soap making, but that hasn't happened yet! I don't make a lot of cheese as I am the only one to eat it and I have a high cholesterol problem.
