I have finally found a source of raw milk. A family of 10 (with one more on the way) livenearby and have extra goat milk I can purchase. They do feed some grain though, and themom told me that it is not organic as they can not afford organic feed. I asked how much grain they got and she said it is not "free choice grain" but "a couple pounds". Every time Ivisit, her older boys have the goats out munching on brushy hedgerows on their property although the area is not fenced in. I don't worry about safety so much as their entire family including small children drink this milk, but I was wondering about the effects of feeding grain. The only other milk I can buy ispasteurized, non homogenized milk as selling raw milk is illegal in this state.I have purchase some and it tastes wonderful. What do you guys think? Guest guest
What is meant by GRAIN FED is that BIG DAIRY INC Feeds its cows almost exclusively on grain and silage and the cows dont get to go out to graze in the PASTURE! this causes many more problems than I will recite however it causes more Ecoli to be produced I wouldnt drink raw milk from one of THOSE FACTORY FARMS! Cows that Graze Pasture and get a Grain supplement are a totally diferent Situation and thats where its safe to Drink raw assuming Handling is Hygenic..... Guest guest
I usually don't add much, but I thought I'd put in my two cents on this one... She probably feeds the grain while the goat is being milked. That's why it is just a little bit of it (a couple pounds is like about a 4 cup serving twice a day) - enough to keep the goat happy for the 5-7 minutes it takes to milk her. It keeps the goat behaving well and standing still while being milked. She probably feeds a sweet cob (corn, oats & barley - c.o.b. with molases). Goats (mine at least) really like it. It can be difficult to find organic sweet feed, and very expensive. In an ideal world, they would carry it at the local feed store or you can go to the local co-op and order the grains in bulk and mix them yourselves, but both options get expensive or may not be available. I would just ask to make sure there is no protein (in the form of animal protein - aka cow brains, chicken waste, etc...) added to the sweet feed she gives her goats (you can look at the label on the bag). Like someone else just said, getting a little grain is not the same as being grain fed. What it comes down to is the same question I ask myself, and the people that buy my milk must ask themselves, " Is it better to drink fresh, local, raw milk (though not organic) or pasteurized organic? " Ideally it would be both, but it can't always be, so it's up to you. Good luck with your decision. Micah > > I have finally found a source of raw milk. Guest guest
I totally agree!Grain finished beef is bad.I feed my girls organic locally grown feed.I tried going strictly hay and grass fed.Ended up basically starving my goats. If grain fed is bad then I'll continue being bad. vicki www.afterthoughtfarm.com
