I am pretty sensative to caffeine especially in tea.

I have tried dipping my tea bags in hot water for about 30-40 seconds to get rid

of the caffeine but it is not enough. I am waking up at 2,3,or 4 in the morning

and I am not sleeping well. Does anyone have any ideas or does anyone use any

tea brand that tends to not have a great deal of caffeine? I am using Lipton and

I think it has a lot of caffeine in it. Wondering if I should switch to

naturally decaffeinated lipton brand.

Try using the combo of white with the black n don't drink after a certain time

of the day. This you will have to decide what time with trial n error.

Yep, timing was the first thing I was going to suggest.  Drink your kombucha

first thing in the morning so that what caffeine is left after you do your home

decaffinating method has plenty of time to leave your system.

Sounds like you're on track with it being the caffiene then. That's too

bad. I react to the small amount of alcohol in it. Not in a bad way but I

can always feel it. I am not as sensitive to the caffeine though. I do

have a long history of sleep issues and one of the things they told me was

to avoid anything with caffeine after 12 pm if you are really sensitive to

it. Since I have no intention of giving up chocolate or of only eating it

before noon I had to come up with another plan. LOL

I actually use a melatonin mix at night. It also has GABA, passion flower,

magnesium and a few other things in it, plus I take additional magnesium.

Melatonin alone didn't work for me either. I have been able to go off the

prescription sleep aids which I was basically addicted to for a number of

years.

Good luck in getting the caffeine low enough. The idea of using some white

tea sounded like a good on to me.

White tea does sound like a good idea as well. I can tolerate some caffeine but

not much so I think I will be able to get the caffeine to a tolerable amount but

it will take a bit of work and experimenting on my end.

I was almost off my sleep aid. I was using cod liver oil and green foods but I

ran out of my green foods a couple of weeks ago and have had to increase my

sleep aid amount. I expect my green foods to arrive soon and with is deep sleep.

It is not entirely kombucha's fault but I can tell it does play a part. What is

GABA? I do take mag. some nights and took some tonight. I also have melatonin

and will try to add it tonight to the mix. What does passion flower do? I have

not heard of this either. Thanks for your thought. I appreciate it.

To reduce the caffeine in my kt, I use mostly green tea and then I cold brew it.

Cold brew releases less caffeine. I brew the black tea separately using only one

our two bags.

*GABA or gamma-aminobutyric acid, discovered in 1950, is the most important

and widespread inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain. Excitation in the

brain must be balanced with inhibition. Too much excitation can lead to

restlessness, irritability, insomnia, and even seizures. GABA is able to

induce relaxation, analgesia, and sleep. *

**Passion flower has been used to treat sleep disorders and historically in

homeopathic medicine to treat pain, insomnia related to neurasthenia or

hysteria, and nervous exhaustion.

**What I actually use is this:

Melatonin Sleep Science by Source Naturals made specially for Whole Foods

Contains:

Magnesium 150 mg

GABA 250 mg

Taurine 150 mg

Glycine 100 mg

Passionflower Leaf and Flower 60 mg

Lemon Balm Leaf Extract 50 mg

Skullcap Aerial Parts 35 mg

Chamomile Flower Extract 30 mg

L-Theanine 25 mg

Hops Flower Extract 25 mg

Melatonin 3 mg

Most of the ingredients have been shown to help with relaxation and/or sleep

just google them if you are unfamiliar with them. I find it helps me both

fall asleep and stay asleep. And as a life long sufferer of insomnia I find

it a blessing. Not getting much sleep night after night dramatically

impacts mood, pain tolerance, cognitive function, etc etc ... Sleep is

essential. I personally do not get a hung over feeling from this like I did

from Ambien and the like.

And Rezz I only understood a fraction of what you sent but you do not sound

like someone who has lived through YEARS of insomnia. A whole lot of maybes

and what ifs " could " result in better sleep for me without this supplement

but I have tried a whole lot of maybes and what ifs along the way. This

works - for me - and I am okay with it.

- and FYI - I also started LDN (low dose naltrexone) around the time

I found this sleep aid. I do not use LDN for sleep but it is taken at night

and could also be contributing to my improved sleep so just a caveat there.

If I just take the LDN and not the other I do not sleep as well. I always

take the LDN. It has been a true and absolute blessing for me and my

ulcerative colitis is now about a year in remission.

Hi Everyone,

I am new to this group and have been amazed at the information/passion that is

generated here! Thanks to everyone who contributes.

My first brew was really strong after 5 days, thanks I believe to the generous

and very strong starter - thanks in Penrith for that!

I only made 2 litres and it ran out before the next brew was ready, this time 4

litres. After 10 days this was still just slightly sweet.

I've some questions.

1. Did the second brew take so much longer because the starter wasn't so strong,

or because it was twice the volume?

2. If my new starter isn't strong, can I add some cider vinegar to it and will

this speed the brew along?

3. Is there a ratio of scoby to volume of Kombucha? I made 6 litres for my 3rd

and current batch - trying to match production to demand!

4. I read I should use white refined sugar, is this wrong advice - Rezz said:

" if we are serious about

brewing, we will feed the scoby as if it were our child in

infancy. give it the best ingredients|environment|love that you possibly can,

yes? isolated sucrose{granulated extracted sugars}-

i have repeatedly addressed in this forum and no one seems to want to even

acknowledge it for feeding to a scoby? this produces

alcohol every time it is introduced to a brew. no isolated sugars, no alcohol

produced period! "

So what sugar is the best and should I be choosing organic tea?

5. Finally, I have limited worktop space in my kitchen. Could I put a bowl on

top of the microwave? Or would the microwave damage it?

Clueless in Carlisle - but keen to learn

Kris
