In fact, the OC is ranked as the second most populous county in the state of California, and the fifth most populous in the United States. Analysts note that Orange County's booming housing market has experienced a 125 percent appreciation in five years and is still going strong. To cater to the needs of this sizeable market, UC Irvine Extension is presenting a two-day course to educate Orange County's growing population about the environmental factors that cause mold, tactics for preventing mold formation, and effective methods for solving mold problems in their homes and in the workplace. The course is entitled, " MOLD: Recognition, Evaluation and Control " and will be held November 17 to November 18 from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the UCI Learning Center in Orange, Calif. -ORANGE COUNTY'S MIX OF NEW AND OLD HOMES AT RISK FOR HARMFUL MOLD- Although many people conjure up images of old, drafty homes as perfect habitats for mold, it is actually the newer homes - those constructed quickly with mold-friendly materials such as sheetrock - that are the most prolific breeding grounds. However, poor caulking under the windows, inadequate runoff areas around the house, leaky pipes and other such problems commonly found in older constructions can all create mold problems as well. " Ignoring mold issues can cause contamination and deterioration of property, not to mention health problems such as headaches, respiratory ailments and allergic reactions, " said Rogelio C. , Director of Engineering and Science Programs for UC Irvine Extension. -COURSE EDUCATES OC PROFESSIONALS CLOSEST TO THE MUSHROOMING PROBLEM- " MOLD: Recognition, Evaluation and Control " will explore the quantitative measures and instrumentation used to evaluate mold problems and determine improvement measures. Through a series of lectures, group discussions, and small group real-life evaluations of mold problems, participants will learn how to apply the principles of industrial hygiene in the investigation and remediation of mold. The two-day mold course is of interest to those responsible for indoor air quality including, building managers, construction and property managers, developers, environmental/health and safety professionals, industrial hygienists, real estate attorneys, insurance company representatives and adjusters, and environmental remediation companies. Hamid Arabzadeh, a lecturer at the Center for Occupational and Environmental Health for the College of Medicine at UC Irvine, will teach the course. Arabzadeh is a national and international speaker on environmental health and safety topics, including mold as a public health issue. " This course will teach participants to recognize the contaminants and mold-related factors that cause indoor air quality problems, " said Arabzadeh. " Upon completion of this course, students will be able to better manage the indoor environment of a facility. " For more information, contact Judy Purewal at (949) 824-6538.
