Zoloft and weight gain

Hi group,

Haven't been on for a while. My daughter, Belle (9), is doing very

well on her 75mg of Zoloft. Very few symptoms remain. BUT, she has

been gaining weight. She was a petite, little thing, now she's not

fat, but getting plumb. The Doc says that it's a side effect of

Zoloft.

Any experience with this? Will it stop, recede?

Thanks

My son also on Zoloft. My son was just at the family doctor and they are

concerned about this weight gain. I have noticed it in my son and plan to go

for walks when whether is warmer (I can't stand the cold). I don't know if it

will stop. I remember people on the list mentioning something to help keep

the weight under control. I would be interested in suggestions from the list

on this. I am going to bring this up to the doctor when we go back.

Hi , What excellent news that Belle is doing so well with managing her

OCD. I understand your concern about the weight gain. My Tommy also has gained

weight on SSRI's and he has a bit of a belly, where there was once none! I do

share your concerns about that especially as obesity does run in my side of the

family and I was plump in my growing up years. While I am not willowy now, I do

have to (attempt) watch what I eat so as to not follow my mothers path and

become very heavy. On the flip side, if asked to chose between weight gain and

taking Tommy off SSRI's in order to help him lose weight I would have to answer

with a resounding NO, there is no way that I would even think about it! THese

medications have helped him to have a life, where there was none, therefore a

little extra weight is a small price to pay for the ability to partake in life

and be part of the family. Just my thoughts, in Southeastern PA

Topomax in the medication that has been successfully prescribed to some list

members, but as I recall it was for older ones and adults. I do not know what

the age is for adminstration of this medication, so it is best to ask the Dr.

Hi , this is personal experience only: Each time Kel (8) started an SSRI

(with the exception of Prozac), she put on 5-6 pounds pretty quickly and got

pudgy...belly, full face, etc. But for her, that was it, and over time she

gradually lost it (usually helped along by a case of the flu or whatever that

caused her to not eat much for 2-3 days), or grew into the extra weight. I have

no idea whether this is typical experience or not. FWIW.
