But isn't that better - assuming it is helping you - than having all that crud in your lungs? Filters act like a sieve, collecting the comparatively large particles but letting the much smaller air pass through. Like sifting sand through screen wire or rocks through chicken wire. The particles that are blocked by the filter media stay on the surface, eventually clogging the holes so not enough air can get through. If air can't get through then there is no particle removal. So you have to replace them every so often. The better the filter, the smaller the holes in the media. The smaller the holes the more particles it collects so the faster it needs replacing. So count your blessings that you have to replace the media in air filters. But for cost comparisions vs effectiveness, begin with the CADR rating (clean air delivery rate). The higher the rating the more cost effective the device. The best are around 300-400, moderate around 100 and the least effective are around 20-30. But some of the most expensive ones have a CADR only in the 20-30 range. That's one benefit of the CADR when comparison shopping.
